The Boyd Yellowjackets found something they had no answer for Friday night — the Melissa Cardinals’ Hondo Webb.
The 6-2 swingman poured in 23 points, including 11 in the third quarter, of the Cardinals’ 54-35 victory over the Yellowjackets in the Class 2A Region II area game at Denton Ryan High School.
“He’s a freak,” said Boyd forward Tim Fleming. “He was mechanically great. I was going full speed trying to cover him.”
Boyd varsity coach Oscar Hernandez added: “Talking with Brock and Peaster, they think he’s be the best player in the region. He’s dang good.”
The loss ended the Boyd season after winning 20 games and a bi-district title three years after recording just one victory.
“I’m so proud of these guys,” Hernandez said. “They accomplished a lot of our goals.”

Boyd got off to a solid start, leading 11-9 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Melissa stormed back behind the combination of Webb and Ian Hatfield. The duo put in 12 points in the frame as Melissa went on an 18-7 spurt to take a 27-18 lead.
“They were back-cutting and getting some open shots,” Fleming said.
Melissa put the game away in the third quarter behind Webb. He completed a three-point play with 4:13 left to put the Cardinals up 17, 38-21. It was the third of the five field goals he knocked down in the frame.
Melissa also tightened the defense, forcing five Boyd turnovers and holding the Yellowjackets to just one field goal. Boyd did not knock down a shot over the final 6:31 of the quarter after Junior Whatley’s 3-pointer.
“We couldn’t hit anything,” Fleming said.
Whatley finished with nine points.
Melissa took a 48-24 lead into the fourth quarter. It led by as many as 28, 52-24, in the final frame.
Boyd scored the game’s final six points to close the final margin to 19.
Fleming scored seven in his final game for the Yellowjackets. Travis Williams also put in seven. Edgar Lugo added six. Kyle Stearns, Jake May and Jared Cate had two each.
