Boyd holds off Pilot Point 39-37

Four years after winning just one game, the Boyd Yellowjackets are now bi-district champions.
Boyd outlasted Pilot Point to win the Class 2A Region II bi-district title game 39-37 Tuesday night at Northwest’s Texan Gym.
Boyd will play Melissa in the area round Friday at 7 p.m. at Denton Ryan High School.
Boyd held a slim one-point edge in the fourth quarter when Edgar Lugo and Junior Whatley drilled 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to take a 29-22 lead with 5:50 left.
Lugo and Whatley finished with nine points each.
Boyd built the edge to seven, 35-28, on a Travis Williams basket with 2:55 remaining.
Pilot Point close back within three with 16 seconds left. Boyd’s Tim Fleming then sealed the victory, hitting a free throw. Fleming finished with eight points.
Boyd started the game slow, missing its first four field-goal attempts. Pilot Point held an 11-7 lead after the first quarter.
Boyd rallied in the second quarter to take a 16-15 halftime. It held Pilot Point to just two field goals in the second quarter. Boyd tied the game on basket in transition by Jared Cate and took a 16-13 lead on a 3-pointer by Junior Whatley with 3:21 left in the half.
Pilot Point was paced by big man Logan Johnson in the first half. He had eight in the first quarter and a layup in the final seconds of the half to pull Pilot Point within one at the break. Johnson finished with 10.
Michael Pelzel also scored 10 and pulled down 17 rebounds for the Bearcats.
