Sissies hold off Lady Eagles

The Bridgeport Sissies kept their District 5-3A title hopes alive Friday night, staving off the Decatur Lady Eagles’ upset bid.
Bridgeport ended the game on a 14-4 run to earn a 49-39 victory at Bridgeport High School Gym.
The victory along with Vernon’s upset of Iowa Park put Bridgeport in a tie for second at one game back of Burkburnett with one game left in district play.
Bridgeport’s closing run came after Decatur took a 35-34 lead on a basket by Jaci Isham with 7:26 left. Presley White tied the game at the free-throw line. Bridgeport senior guard Macy Bishop broke the tie with her short jumper. She added a second one 1:14 later to give the Sissies a four-point edge, 39-35.
Decatur could not catch back up as Emily Price and Haley Meekins put the game away for Bridgeport with a combined seven points in the final 3:30. Price, who finished seven, completed a three-point play with 2:26 remaining to put Bridgeport up eight, 47-39.
Meekins finished with 12. White led the Sissies with 17.
Decatur was led by Mercy Staley with 16 points.
Staley scored seven in the first quarter, helping Decatur out to a 13-6 lead to open the game. A pair of free throws by Bridgeport’s Alyssa Holmes in the final 20 seconds of the quarter cut Decatur’s lead to five, 13-8.
Bridgeport took the lead on Becca Logan’s 3-pointer with 2:23 left in the first half. Bridgeport took a 19-18 lead into halftime.
Bridgeport led by as many as seven in the third quarter, 25-18, but couldn’t shake Decatur. Staley hit two layups in the final 39 seconds of the quarter to get Decatur within a point, 34-33.
