Texans take over first place in 5-5A

The Northwest Texans are alone atop District 5-5A.
Behind a strong defensive effort and its work on the boards, Northwest (17-8, 7-2) knocked off Colleyville Heritage 48-39 in the battle of the district co-leaders.
Edem Agbottah and Parrish Smith led the Texans with nine each. Agbottah also pulled down 13 rebounds.
Northwest led wire to wire.
In front of its rowdy crowd, Northwest ran out to a fast start and built an 11-point first-half lead, 20-9. The Texans took a 22-16 lead into halftime.
Heritage used a 5-0 to start the fourth quarter to chisel into the Texans’ lead, closing to within three, 34-31, with 5:20 left. Northwest’s Daymian Marshall ended the run, burying a 3-pointer from the right wing to put the Texans back up by six.
Heritage closed back within three, 42-39, with 1:01 left. After a missed shot by the Texans, Heritage looked to clear the ball and have a chance to tie the game. Northwest’s Allen Young did not allow the ball to get out the backcourt, getting the steal and earning a trip to the free-throw line. Young hit both free throws with 38 ticks left on the clock to put Northwest back up by five and secure the win.
Heritage was led by Colton Gober with nine. Austin Leonard added seven.
