Slidell maintains spot atop 17-A

The Slidell Lady Greyhounds turned up its defense to maintain their spot atop of the District 17-A standings Friday night.
Slidell held the Saint Jo Lady Panthers without a basket in the first quarter and never allowed them to reach double figures in a quarter in a 38-22 victory.
After leading 12-9 at halftime, Slidell opened the second half with a 14-0 run. Chanel Brewer scored seven straight during the run, hitting on two jumpers around a 3-pointer to help Slidell to a 26-9 lead. Brewer finished with nine points.
Saint Jo was not able to break through with its first points of the second half until 2:03 left in the third quarter.
Slidell took a 26-13 lead into the fourth quarter and expanded it to 15, 31-16, on a three-point play by Sarah Davis with 4:20 left.
Saint Jo crept within 11 with 2:17 remaining. Slidell then iced the game at the free-throw line with Davis hitting three free throws in the final minute.
Davis finished with a team-high 11 points. Katy Stephens added nine. Allie Staub scored five. Bobbi Clemmer and Rebekah McGregor each had two.
Jessica Ramirez and Kara Davis led Saint Jo with six each. Slidell held Saint Jo’s freshman standout Kyla Reeves to five.
