  • The Decatur High School baseball team took its first step toward advancing in the state playoffs Thursday night in Mineral Wells. The Eagles (20-8) scored early and played solid defense down the stretch to beat Glen Rose 5-2 in the first game of a best-of-three Class 3A regional quarterfinal series.
Leading by just one run in the top of the seventh inning, Decatur’s Brennan Moore scored on a passed ball and Ryan Cangley blasted a solo home run to give the Eagles a three-run lead. DHS starting pitcher Jake Connally picked up the win and Andrew Gage collected the win in three innings of work,
Decatur, which handed the Tigers just their fifth loss of the season, will return to Mineral Wells at 3 p.m. Saturday where they will try to close out the series. If a third game is needed, it will begin 30 minutes after the end of game two.
