Ropin steers, students; Blessing splits time between classroom, rodeo arena

During the day, Jarrett Blessing rounds up Decatur Middle School students to teach them lessons in ag science and industrial technology.

When the final bell rings, the 10-year teacher puts on his boots and hat to become one of the nation’s top steer ropers. Blessing recently won the San Angelo Fiesta, an invitational event for the top 25 steer ropers in the world, bringing home $9,000. It was one of the biggest wins in his almost nine years of steer roping. Only his average title victory at the 2007 national finals paid him more.
