"Vernon came out ready to play, which brought a great competitive feeling to the game," said Coach Claire Rose. "Our girls handled it well and quickly jumped out on top, never letting up."
Decatur had a strong service game and kept Vernon's big hitters out of the game, Rose said. The serve receive passing was consistent and helped Decatur control the net. Moving the ball around also helped open up holes for the hitters.
Ingrid Boatman added six kills, and Kortni Robinson and Smurthwaite five each. Smurthwaite blocked five shots and had a pair of aces. Lynzee Jordan, Thompkins and Carmen Cash also served two aces each.
Tompkins dug out 10 attempts, as did Oxford, Smurthwaite eight, Jordan five, Cash four and Claribel Trejo three.
The Lady Eagles, 6-0 in district and 33-5 on the season, faced Hirschi Friday and host Bridgeport Tuesday.
