Decatur buzzed through another varsity district volleyball opponent Tuesday, dispatching Burkburnett in three games, 25-9, 25-8, 25-17. That left the 4-0 Lady Eagles with Iowa Park to complete a sweep of the first half of district play. (The two teams met Friday evening.)
Coach Claire Rose said Burkburnett kept the Decatur defense on its toes with off-speed attacks along with constant down balls and free balls.
"We came out very strong and confident," she said. "We did with (the free balls and down balls) what we could and did a good job of putting the ball away."
With nearly half their points coming from kills, Decatur kept control. Sara Oxford scored 16 kills, Kortney Tompkins eight, and Fleming Smurthwaite, Ingrid Boatman and Haley Dale three each. Oxford blocked a pair of shots and Annelise Carpenter two. Smurthwaite served five aces.
Lynzee Jordan and Oxford each had eight digs, Smurthwaite and Tompkins seven each and Carmen Cash six. Smurthwaite put up 24 assists and Joey Redwine eight.
