After losing to Nocona in its own tournament last weekend, the Decatur Lady Eagles evened the score with a four-game win Tuesday. Three of the four were decided by two points.
Decatur broke on top with the longest game of the night, 29-27 and seemed to take control with a 25-18 game. But Nocona fought back for a 26-24 win before Decatur closed it out 25-23.
"Nocona is a very solid team that has a lot of the same qualities as us, so it definitely was an even match," said Coach Claire Rose. "I am very proud of the girls for stepping up and challenging Nocona each point of the game."
Rose said a close match was what her team needed, and the girls fought hard throughout.
The result was 43 kills and 41 blocks by the front line. Sara Oxford contributed 15 kills and 14 blocks, Kortney Tompkins 10 kills and two blocks, Ingrid Boatman eight kills and six blocks, Fleming Smurthwaite five kills and seven blocks, Kortni Robinson four kills and six blocks, and Ciara Currin one kill and six blocks.
The defense dug out 91 shots, 22 by Tompkins, 14 by Smurthwaite, 13 by Oxford, 10 from Carmen Cash, nine by Claribel Trejo, seven each from Boatman and Lynzee Jordan, six by Robinson and three from Currin.
Smurthwaite put up 35 assists. She also had three aces, as did Oxford.
