Creative Bulls fall short against Godley

Published Saturday, November 18, 2017
By Richard Greene

Playing against their former quarterback, the Bridgeport Bulls put together a creative game plan Friday night to utilize the talents of their current signal caller. The Bulls lined sophomore Jadon Maddux up in a variety of sets in the backfield, creating opportunities for big plays on which he delivered. Maddux ran for a score, threw for another and set up a third touchdown with a halfback pass to help the Bulls to a three-point lead with the ball with under seven minutes left. Trying to nurse home the lead, Michael Cole lunged for a first down just across midfield. When he hit the ground, the ball popped loose. Godley’s Sebastian Rivera scooped up the ball and rumbled 60 yards for the game-winning touchdown in the Wildcats’ 32-28 win over Bridgeport in the 4A Division I bi-district game at Aledo’s Bearcat Stadium.

The Lady Yellowjackets found themselves down 2-0 and on the verge of seeing their first trip to the state tournament come to a quick end. Boyd’s rally falls short in five-set 3A semifinal

Published Thursday, November 16, 2017
By Richard Greene

The Boyd Lady Yellowjackets’ season appeared on the brink twice Thursday, facing the defending 3A champions. Boyd dropped the first two sets and then fell down 18-12 in the fourth. But both times, the Lady Yellowjackets picked themselves up off the canvas with stellar defense from Larrin Maxwell and timely attacks by juniors Macee Valtr and Jordyn Todd to ultimately force a fifth-set tiebreaker. The Lady Yellowjackets just couldn’t make a final rally with Goliad, scoring five of the last six points to take the tiebreaker and the Class 3A semifinal at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, 3-2 (25-17, 25-11, 22-25, 23-25, 15-11).

Boyd fans flock to watch Lady Yellowjackets

Lindsey Chancellor ditched one of her classes Thursday at Arlington Baptist with a legitimate excuse. After going through a winless campaign her freshman year at Boyd six years before, the college sophomore had to be in Garland to see the Lady Yellowjackets make their debut in the state tournament. “I wasn’t going to miss this,” Chancellor said. “If they win, I’m going to be here on Saturday. “No one thought this would happen. This is a dream come true for the whole town.” When the gates opened at the Curtis Culwell Center at 10 a.m. sharp, it appeared as if the whole community had made the voyage more than an hour east to see their Lady Yellowjackets in action.
