After a fifth straight Decatur possession ended without points, the Eagles desperately needed a break Friday night. Two plays later a bad snap rolled on the turf to Hirschi quarterback Martez V’rana with Decatur defenders closing in. Instead of the turnover the Eagles needed, V’rana corralled the ball and then broke free for a back-breaking 69-yard touchdown run to send Hirschi on the way to a 58-28 victory at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex in Denton.

Hirschi ends Decatur’s run

For the first few minutes, it looked like Decatur’s Cinderella season would continue Friday against Wichita Falls Hirschi. On the first drive of the game, junior quarterback Wilson Hicks found Dane Fitzgerald on a seam route that led to a quick touchdown to put the Eagles up 7-0. But that’s when time began running out on Decatur’s playoff run. As the Eagles’ offense started to sputter, the Huskies’ offense got going, quickly building a double-digit lead. And on a 68-yard touchdown run by Daimarqua Foster in the third quarter, the clock eventually struck midnight, as Hirschi downed Decatur 58-28 to close the book on the Eagles’ storybook year.

At halftime, Decatur coach Lindsay Griffin talked extensively about crashing the offensive boards. In the final two minutes Tuesday, the Lady Eagles showed they got the message. Decatur pulled down six offensive boards in the span to close out a 38-35 victory over the Alvord Lady Bulldogs at Decatur High School gym.

With their dramatic victory over Andrews in the Class 4A Division I area tilt Friday, the Decatur Eagles will make their first trip to the third round since 2013. Awaiting them in the next round is a rematch with District 4-4A Division I rival Wichita Falls Hirschi. The Huskies took down Lubbock Estacado 41-17 Friday. Decatur and Hirschi will play in the regional round at 7 p.m. Friday at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex in Denton.

Dane Fitzgerald had not played a snap for the Decatur Eagles since breaking his sternum on Sept. 8. It took more than two months of rehab, but Fitzgerald made his anxiously awaited return on the biggest stage Friday night. With the lights shining the brightest — perhaps with a tint of blue — Fitzgerald came up clutch, hauling in the game-winning touchdown pass to send Decatur past Andrews 55-48 and into the 4A Division I regional round.

Bridgeport’s Zane Morrow hit a pair of free throws with two seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 47 and force overtime against the unbeaten Aubrey Chaparrals Tuesday. In the extra period, Bridgeport managed only one field goal as Aubrey (3-0) outscored the Bulls 14-5 in a 61-52 victory at Bridgeport High School.
