After holding on to win a pair of back-and-forth sets, the Bridgeport Sissies seized the chance for a season-opening sweep Tuesday. Bridgeport scored eight of the first nine points in the third game on the way finishing off Paradise, 26-24, 25-22, 25-19, at Bridgeport High School gym.

As lightning flashed off in the distance, Nation described a sense of electricity as he awaited the stroke of midnight and the start of the first practice of the 2017 season.

Elder earns spot on TSWA baseball team

Recent Decatur graduate and Texas signee Bryce Elder added another honor. The Eagles ace was named the relief pitcher on the 4A Texas Sportswriters Association team. Elder went 7-2 with a minuscule ERA of 0.603 in 69.2 innings. He threw a pair of no-hitters in the playoffs, while leading the Eagles to their second region finals appearance.

Jacob Webster and his Northwest teammates got a taste of the state meet last year. The Northwest junior and the Texans now want another serving. “[Getting back to state] is our No. 1 priority,” Webster said Friday at the team’s time trial. Webster turned in the team’s top time in the mile and one-half trial around the Pike Middle School campus.
