The Boyd Yellowjackets' game plan coming into Friday's matchup against in-county district rival Chico was simple: contain Dragons running back Kyler Hale.
Judging by Boyd's 47-7 win in Chico, it appears it was mission accomplished.
Hale actually rushed for 115 yards, above his season average, but he was kept out of the end zone until 2:42 was left in the game. It was Chico's only score for the evening.
The Yellowjackets took control of the game early, scoring three first quarter touchdowns. The first came on a 5-yard run by Jeremy Sessums with 9:17 left in the quarter. Tim Fleming added a 15-yard rushing touchdown six minutes later, and Fleming connected on a 9-yard pass to Ryan Wilson for Boyd's third score. Edgar Lugo was 2 for 3 on point-after kicks to give Boyd a 20-0 lead heading into the second quarter.
Sessums added another touchdown on a 5-yard run with 1:17 left in the half. Fleming's run for 2 points gave Boyd a 28-0 lead.
Boyd continued to pour it on in the second half with touchdown runs by Wilson and Sessums in the third quarter. Neal Livingston's 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter ended Boyd's scoring for the evening.
Chico head coach Pete Hart said he could sum up the game easily: "missed tackles and too many penalties," he said.
Boyd head coach J.G. Cartwright, whose team was coming off a bye week following a blowout loss to Grandview, said he was proud of the way his team played, especially the defense.
The Yellowjackets' defense held Chico to only 205 total yards of offense while Boyd's offense racked up 375 yards.
The win improved Boyd's record to 3-3, 1-0 in district. Chico dropped to 2-4 and 0-1.
