Sports Briefs for April 5

The Decatur Girls Softball Association's opening ceremony was to be Saturday, April 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to kick off the season. Their event was to have vendors, raffles, great food and lots of fun games for all ages with some specialized skill training sessions, too. Prizes were to be awarded to girls from each age group. This is the main fundraising event for the girls and the season.

Roger Brown basketball clinic starts April 9

Decatur High School basketball coach Roger Brown will be hosting his youth basketball camp in April for all boys first through fifth grades. The camp dates will be Thursdays, April 9 and 23 and Monday, April 13 and 20 from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. The purpose of the camp is to have fun, teach fundamentals and form good dribbling, passing and shooting habits through repetition. The camp, which is limited to 30 boys, is $40. For more information, call coach Brown at (903) 366-2791.

Wise volleyball league starts soon

The second annual North Texas Showdown Volleyball League is still signing up athletes for its May league. The league is open to all incoming Wise County seventh through 12th grade girls, and the cost is $50 per player. High school teams will play on Friday nights, while middle school spikers will compete on Saturdays. The season will end May 31 with a tournament. T-shirts will be provided for all students and awards will be given for MVP, best hitter, best setter and best defense given at the end of the season. Sixth grade boys select basketball

A new select basketball team for sixth grade girls and boys is forming and tryouts will be held this month. The team, which will practice in south Wise County, will play in competitive select tournaments this spring and summer. One spot left on varsity basketball team

The DFW Lady Lakers select basketball team has two open spots on one of its two elite select basketball teams. To try out for the 18-and-under team, which has posted a record of 258-36 over the last three years and plays in the biggest college coach-look tournaments in the country, send an e-mail to team@ladylakers.com or visit www.ladylakers.com.

Women's soccer league forming

A new Wise County women's 7-on-7 soccer league will begin in April for all girls 16-and-over. The games will be played every Saturday in Wise County. For information, call Lori Palacios at (817) 308-6892.

Select softball team is almost full

A new girls' select softball team is forming in the Justin/Rhome/Haslet area for girls with '96 and '97 birthdays. There will be open practice and tryouts on Sunday afternoons at the Northwest High School softball fields from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. For information, call coach Terry at (817) 675-6824 or visit www.leaguelineup.com/show_stoppers.

South Wise 11U baseball team

A Haslet-area 11-and-under select baseball team is conducting tryouts for its select season. Call Coach Kurt at (817) 723-9295 or e-mail him at Chaosports@yahoo.com for times and location.

Competitive swim team tryouts

Tryouts for Decatur's new USA Swim Team Quest Aquatics will be held the first and third Tuesdays of each month from 6:30 to 7 p.m. at Fit-N-Wise. For more information, call (940) 627-2708, ext. 2607.

The Decatur High School athletic department said solicitors are asking local businesses to buy advertisements for a calendar, but the department has not authorized anyone to produce a calendar. The school does not receive any proceeds from this.
