For 16 minutes Tuesday night at home, the Bridgeport High School boys' basketball team gave second-place Hirschi fits by spreading the floor offensively and crashing the boards on defense.
Then along came the second half and all the momentum was lost. The Huskies, who led by just nine points in the first half, outscored the Bulls by 22 in the second half to earn a season sweep over Bridgeport with an 80-47 decision.
"We did some good things in the first half," said BHS coach Brandt Lockhart. "We had a bad third quarter and they had a good one."
The loss dropped Bridgeport to 1-5 in District 5-3A action and 7-11 for the season. Hirschi is in second place and one game back from Burkburnett at 5-1 and 16-10.
The Huskies had the hot hand from the start. Led by Tevin Edwards' game-high 19 points, they cruised to a 20-9 lead in the first quarter. John Arrington and Kyle Parker took care of the scoring for Bridgeport.
The Bulls had a little more luck in the second quarter where they were patient on offense by spreading the defense and attacking the middle of the lane. Back-to-back buckets by Chase Pemberton and free throws via Daniel Scott helped close the deficit to nine points with 5:39 left in the half.
Hirschi was not quiet for long as it scored 10 unanswered points - including consecutive three-pointers - to take the biggest lead of the half at 35-17. The Bulls trimmed the HHS lead to 13 thanks to baskets by Scott and Pemberton to make it a 36-23 contest at halftime.
The game got away from Bridgeport in the third quarter where the Huskies went on a 24-8 run. Despite baskets by Jace Hudson and Drew Miles, Hirschi took a commanding 60-31 lead into the fourth quarter.
Pemberton led the Bulls in scoring with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Hudson had 10. Scott and Arrington finished with seven points each, while Miles had four, Parker had three, Eddy Brumbley and Jason Mitchell had two each and Collin White had one.
