By Robert Morgan | Published Thursday, February 12, 2009

The most recent setback was last Friday where the Greyhounds struggled defensively against Byers and never led in a 73-54 loss.

Slidell was only outscored 31-29 in the middle quarters, but it was the first and fourth quarters that made the biggest difference. Slidell trailed 21-8 after one quarter and were outscored 21-1 in the final eight minutes in the lopsided loss.

"We just could not contain their two best players. Those two alone had 50 of their points," said SHS coach Andy Simpson, whose team was eliminated from the playoff race. "This was a really damaging loss when looking at the playoff picture."

Trent Myers led the Greyhounds in scoring with 24 points. Dyllon James put up another 18 points, while Blake James added 10.

The Greyhounds did not have the same kind of trouble the day before at Forestburg. They trailed by just four at halftime but were outscored 14 in the second half, which led to a 73-55 loss.

"Those two teams we played are the best in the district, and we gave them a scare for three quarters," said Simpson.

Slidell (9-16, 3-6) trailed by just two points late in the third period before losing its grip on the upset try. The Longhorns closed the game on a 22-14 run to get the win.

James had the hot hand for the Greyhounds with 28 points. Myers was next in scoring with 10 points, one more than Nathan Garrett with nine. Aubrey Fortenberry and T.J. Epting added three points each.
