With 10 days off before its first playoff game, the Bridgeport High School girls' basketball team took on another district champ over the weekend. The end result was just like 29 of 30 other games this season.
The Sissies used a stingy second-half defensive effort against Class 1A Muenster to rally from behind for a 55-49 victory. The win snapped the Hornets' 15-game winning streak.
"This was a great team effort in getting a win before our playoff run," said BHS coach Eddie Fortenberry.
Bridgeport, which moved to 30-1 on the season, will play Llano for the area championship. The game is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday in Dublin.
Muenster did not back down from the larger school. In fact, Sam Endres and Taylor Klement helped give the Hornets a 17-10 lead through one quarter.
The Sissies, who moved up to fourth in the state rankings this week, proved why they expect a long playoff run. They scored a game-high 21 points in the second quarter to move ahead 31-25 at halftime.
Haley Meekins, who had a season-high 14 rebounds, helped keep the momentum in the third quarter. Along with some balanced scoring from Marissa Grooms, Kaitlyn Waynen and Emily Price, the Sissies opened the second half with a 15-7 run.
Bridgeport pushed its lead to 15 points before the Hornets got back on track. Grooms had four steals and Meekins seven defensive rebounds to help fuel the early run.
Klement, who led all scorers with 26 points, help outscore Bridgeport 17-9 in the fourth quarter.
Grooms led the Sissies with 17 points. Meekins finished with nine points, one more than Waynen with eight. Shannon Demmitt and Price added six points each, while Kim Bible had four, Becca Logan had three and Presley White had two.
