Buzzing right along
Carter scores career-high 47 points to secure playoff
By Robert Morgan | Published Sunday, February 22, 2009
Boyd High School boys' basketball coach Oscar Hernandez has spent the last three years rebuilding his program that was hit hard by graduation in 2004. The work and patience paid off this season, and a victory over rival Chico secured the team's first playoff berth in four years.

Facing a Dragon squad with only six players available, the Yellowjackets used their experience and depth to run away with a 77-30 victory.

"I would like to say how proud I am of this team and how much of a pleasure it is to coach these guys," Hernandez said. "I expected a lot of good things out of these guys, and this is only the beginning as we only lose one senior starter this year."

Boyd, which entered the night tied with Millsap for the third and final playoff spot behind Brock and Peaster, got the win to at least finish tied. However, Millsap was upset by Jacksboro Tuesday night, allowing Boyd to capture third place.

The Yellowjackets left no room for surprises in the season finale against Chico. They did everything right in the first quarter and jumped out to a commanding 21-2 lead.

As lopsided as the first eight minutes appeared, it was nothing compared to what was coming next. Trent Carter jump-started his career-best night of 47 points by helping to outscore the Dragons 32-11 in the second quarter.

Carter's point total broke the previous school record of 45 points.

The 32 points, which is a season-high for the Yellowjackets, put the game out of reach before the midway point. They allowed just four first-half baskets to build a 53-13 halftime lead.

There was little offense in the third quarter after the 66-point first half. Both teams combined for just 12 points in the third, nine of which belonged to Boyd, and the Yellowjackets buzzed along to a 62-16 advantage.

Zach Remily and Blake Moss helped lead Chico to a game-high 14 points in the fourth quarter to end the season on a positive note. However, the late run did nothing to cut into the deficit as Boyd answered with 24 points in the final eight minutes.

Kyle Stearns and Travis Williams finished with seven points each for the Yellowjackets, two more than Junior Whatley with five. Austin Ratliff added three points, while Jake May, Edgar Lugo, Tim Warner and Alan Cordona had two each.

"This has been a fun season," Hernandez said. "I'd also like to thank the community and parents for all of their continued support."
