The Eagles lived up to their own expectations as they belted out 14 hits and were never challenged en route to an 11-1 victory that ended in the fifth inning via the mercy rule. More importantly, the decision allowed DHS to stay in contention for the District 5-3A championship.
The Eagles are tied for first place with Vernon at 8-1, and they were scheduled to face the Lions Saturday at 2 p.m. in Decatur to determine the title.
As for Hirschi, Decatur went to work early to chalk up another win. They scored in the first four innings to put the game out of reach.
Brennan Moore made it clear it would be a long, yet short game for Hirschi as he opened the game with a lead-off triple. He didn't stand around long as Colton Parker followed with an RBI single to left field to make it 1-0.
Justin Tompkins knocked in the only other run the Eagles needed when he smacked a double to easily score Parker. Chad Harrison ripped a single to put runners on the corners with no outs.
Zach Gage knocked in his teammates with a two-run single to center field to make it a 4-0 ball game. The Huskies struck out the last two batters to get out of the jam.
The Eagles added one run in the second but the Huskies got it back in the bottom half by scoring once on back-to-back doubles to trim DHS's lead to three, 4-1.
Andrew Gage helped blow the game open in the third inning when he led off with a triple and quickly scored on a double from Zach Gage. Jake Connally and Francisco Perez kept the big hits coming as they followed with RBI doubles to push the lead to 8-1. Moore picked up his second triple in as many bats but he was stranded at third base when Parker popped up.
Decatur tacked on its final three runs in the fourth inning thanks to three hits and two errors to move ahead 11-1. Clint Moore and Zach Gage had base hits and Ryan Cangley had an RBI single to fuel the inning.
