The Bridgeport High School softball team survived a brutal district race to earn the third and final playoff spot. However, the group found out Thursday night that the postseason is a bigger monster.
After waiting an extra week to play, with a first round bye in the Class 3A state playoffs, the Sissies moved on to face West Thursday night in the area title game.
That's where the successful season came to an end as the Trojans showed no flaws in beating Bridgeport 9-0 at Mansfield High School.
West pitcher Ashley Anz had plenty of run support, but she did not need much of it.
The senior standout threw a no-hitter and did not allow a runner to get past second base.
Despite the loss, BHS coach Heath Iglesias was proud of his team's effort against one of the best teams in the state.
"Defensively, we moved to the ball well and threw well despite facing some hard opposing hitters," he said.
Bridgeport finished its year with a 10-15 overall record. Meanwhile, West improved to 24-3 and will face the winner between Burkburnett and Gatesville in the regional quarterfinals.
Sissies pitcher T-Rae Stone faced a batting order that was solid from top to bottom. In fact, the Trojans got base runners every inning and scored in all but the fifth.
West slugger Brooke Morrison was a big reason for that as she went three for four at the plate.
The senior helped score solo runs in each of the first two innings to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead.
Bridgeport lost its grip on the game in the third inning when West punched in four runs to take a 6-0 lead.
The Sissies got a walk in their next at bat, but the runner was stranded at second base.
The Trojans tacked on one run in the fourth inning and two in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
