Superlatives

Offensive Player of the Year

Justin Tompkins, Decatur
Junior, third base

Stats: Tompkins was extremely dangerous with a bat in his hand as he hit .383 with 11 doubles, five home runs and a team-high 36 RBI.

Coach's comments: Justin came through with clutch hitting performances all season long. There is no better example than his playoff series against Sanger.

Defensive Player of the Year

Brennan Moore, Decatur
Junior, second base

Stats: Not only did Moore deliver defensively in district play and the playoffs, but he also did some damage on offense where he hit .375 with nine doubles, three home runs and 15 RBI.

Coach's comments: Brennan plays extremely hard and I can't count the number of times this season that he was able to make plays and get us out of tough situations in big games.

Newcomer of the Year

Toi Glover, Paradise
Freshman, pitcher/outfield

Stats: Glover did not play like a freshman this year and opponents paid the price. On the mound he had a 2.29 ERA and three saves, while he hit .389 behind the plate.

Coach's comment: Toi held opponents to a .193 batting average this season.

Pitcher of the Year

Asa Hand, Alvord
Senior, pitcher

Stats: Hand made his final year at Alvord count as he won his first five games of the season, finishing with 101 strikeouts. The pitching ace helped get Alvord back into the playoffs for the first time since 2002.

Best of the rest

Nick Pike, Paradise
Junior, pitcher/outfield/infield

Stats: Pike was a do-a-little-bit-of-everything player for the Panthers as he played everything from pitcher to outfield to catcher to one of the bases this year. He also found time to hit .278 with five doubles and three home runs. He was also 5-1 as a pitcher.

Coach's comments: Nick was a utility player that regularly rotated positions depending on who was pitching. He did great everywhere.

Corbin Green, Bridgeport
Sophomore, utility

Stats: Green was second in Offensive Player of the Year voting after posting impressive numbers as a 10th grader. He batted .491 for the year with four doubles, one home run, 10 RBI and a .623 slugging percentage.

Coach's comments: Corbin was a starter at some point this season in all positions except first base and catcher. He had a 21-game hitting streak.

Cameron Green, Bridgeport
Junior, pitcher

Stats: The returning letterman finished with a 2.15 ERA with 44 strikeouts. He was a help on offense as well where he hit .313.

Coach's comments: Cameron was very effective on the mound, and he is one reason we had a shot at the playoffs.

Dustin Krebs, Bridgeport
Junior, outfield

Stats: Krebs kept opposing pitchers at bay as hit batted .345 for the season and was consistent on defense.

Coach's comments: Dustin was a solid outfielder and his defense was a big factor in our improvement this year.

Mason Bridwell, Bridgeport
Senior, first base

Stats: The two-year starter batted to the tune of .345 in his final season. He had a slugging percentage of .552, and he also had a spectacular fielding percentage of .952 in a high-profile position.

Coach's comments: Mason was a key hitter in the lineup as he was effective with runners in scoring position.

Tyler Collins, Northwest
Junior, centerfield

Stats: The Texan played with power as he racked up 12 doubles, five home runs, 17 RBI and batted .404 for the season. He also had a fielding percentage of .968.

Justin Toder, Northwest
Senior, third base/pitcher

Stats: The senior was dangerous behind the plate as he threw out 19 runners this year and had a field percentage of .966.

Seth Tate, Boyd
Senior, centerfield

Stats: Despite the Yellowjackets' struggles this season, Tate did not miss a beat. The multi-sport star hit .339 for the season with 17 runs scored, three doubles and was safe on 12 of 13 steals.

Coach's comments: Seth was a very reliable player both defensively and offensively. He threw out several runners from the outfield with his strong arm.

Ryan Cangley, Decatur
Freshmen, catcher

Stats: Cangley is the one of two ninth graders to make the elite list this year, and his work behind the plate was the reason why. His strong arm eliminated many stolen base chances for opponents. He also batted .275 in his first season.

Coach's comments: Ryan was thrown into a tough situation to be a starter at catcher on varsity as a freshman. He learned a lot and came a long way.

Justin Unger, Decatur
Senior, designated hitter

Stats: A preseason injury forced the three-year letterman to have surgery and kept him off the field all season. However, he was lethal when he returned and was crucial in getting the Eagles to the playoffs and several postseason wins. He hit .464 for the year.

Coach's comments: Justin was our team leader throughout the season, and I was extremely proud of how well he performed at the plate after coming back from shoulder surgery.

Chad Harrison, Decatur
Junior, outfield

Stats: Harrison had one of the most lethal bats in the lineup for the regional quarterfinals. He batted .351 with seven doubles, three triples, five home runs and 23 RBI.

Coach's comments: Chad is a great athlete and has some of the quickest hands at the plate I've ever seen in high school baseball.

Tyler Robbins, Decatur
Senior, pitcher

Stats: Robbins did a little bit of everything to make the Eagles a playoff team. He hit .336 with nine doubles and 25 RBI and he pitched with a 2.76 ERA.

Coach's comments: Tyler provided a never-say-die attitude with his performance through the season. Came through with some great pitching in a playoff run.

David Herrera, Chico
Sophomore, outfield/catcher

Stats: Herrera was second in the voting for Newcomer of the Year. Along with his crafty defensive work as a 10th grader, he also hit .310 with 15 RBI and three doubles.

Coach's comments: David did a fantastic job for his first year on varsity. He was the consummate utility man for us this year.

Rush Porter, Chico
Senior, third base

Stats: Porter punished opposing pitchers this year as he hit .348 with 19 RBI and 15 runs scored.

Coach's comments: Rush's calm demeanor and patience at the plate helped him to come through in the clutch for us game after game.

Klent Selz, Chico
Sophomore, designated hitter

Stats: The 10th grader played like a veteran as he batted .320 with 16 runs scored, eight RBI and four doubles.

Coach's comments: It's tough to maintain focus when you don't play on the field but Klent took the role and provided us with someone who could set the table at the top of our lineup for our run producers.

Justin Bridges, Paradise
Senior, shortstop

Stats: Bridges was consistent all season at the plate where he chalked up a .321 batting average along with his 18 RBI and two home runs. He was the only senior on the team this year.

Coach's comments: Justin also played outstanding defense at shortstop and showed tremendous leadership on a young team.

Caleb Read, Paradise
Sophomore, catcher

Stats: Read made his presence felt on both offense and defense this year. He posted a batting average of .343 and was safe on all 13 steal attempts this year.

Coach's comments: Caleb is a great defensive catcher and was hard to run on.

Colton Oldham, Alvord
Senior, second base

Stats: The senior was not kind to opposing pitchers as he hit .390 for the season with a .620 on-base percentage to go along with his 25 RBI.

Coach's comments: Colton was our team leader and played several positions. He was out best all-around player.

Clayton Shaw, Alvord
Junior, third base

Stats: The Bulldogs' best hitter posted a batting average of .387 with a .652 on-base percentage.

Coach's comments: Clayton led our team in almost every offensive category.

Trevor Hahn, Alvord
Junior, pitcher/outfield

Stats: Hahn was the strikeout king for Alvord as he posted a team-high 110 Ks and won five games in district play to get the Bulldogs back to the playoffs after a five-year drought.

Coach's comments: Trevor is a great pitcher and plays a tremendous outfield.

Shane Watkins, Alvord
Junior, outfield

Stats: Watkins' speed made him dangerous everywhere on the field. He had a team-high 21 stolen bases and was a demon on defense which is why he was an easy pick for first-team all-district. He also hit .304 for the year with 33 RBI.

Coach's comments: Shane was our cleanup hitter this year and did a great job.
