In her second year of powerlifting, the Boyd sophomore is getting used to winning. After taking first at multiple meets this spring, Voiselle took third Saturday at the Region VI meet in Leonard to punch her ticket to the state contest in Corpus Christi March 19-20.
Voiselle lifted a personal best 735 pounds at regionals to narrowly take third in the 165-pound class and earn her first trip to state.
"It was so close," she said. "After I found out [I was going to state], I lost control."
Voiselle pulled up 310 pounds on her final deadlift to advance to state. Her main competitor missed her effort at 320 that would have created a tie.
"She weighed less, so she would have got the spot," Voiselle said. "Luckily, she didn't get it."
It was Voiselle's second trip to regionals. She finished seventh last year as a freshman.
After that experience, she dedicated herself to the sport, spending four days a week working out between 30 and 45 minutes.
"It's about two hours per week," Voiselle said. "Monday through Thursday I lift and spend Fridays getting mentally prepared."
Boyd coach Mike Boyers said Voiselle is very dedicated.
"She works hard every day," Boyers said. "This is not a glamorous sport. It takes a lot of hard work. She's driven and likes to do it."
Voiselle is not satisfied with making it to state. She is hoping to bring home a medal.
"I think I can," Voiselle said. "It's going to be hard. There's a lot of really strong girls. Looking at the other regions, I'm ranked high up there."
Boyers expects her to be in the hunt for some hardware.
"She's got three weeks until the meet," her coach said. "She can go up more."
