If district championships were decided on most ties, then the Decatur High School boys' soccer team could have clinched a title in its first two weeks of league play.
However, that is not the case, and the Eagles are still searching for a victory. Decatur gave up a late goal for the second time in as many weeks Friday night against Wichita Falls and had to settle for a 1-1 tie at home.
"It was disappointing not coming away with two points in this game," said DHS coach Nick Stokes. "The kids played well enough to win the whole match, we just did not finish."
In soccer, a win is worth two points, a tie is worth one and no points are honored for a loss. So, Decatur's winless, yet undefeated district mark of 0-0-3 is not all that bad as it has three points that will go toward the district standings.
The Eagles struck early in the game when Francisco Bermudez punched a shot past the goalie just 10 minutes into the game. The goal gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead that nearly helped up as the game winner.
The Coyotes, who struggled for much momentum against the stingy DHS defense, were held scoreless for most of the game. They finally found the back of the net with less than 10 minutes left in the second half on a deflected free kick.
Goalie Luis Tristan was spectacular once again as he racked up 12 saves. Valentin Carrillo and Felipe were also solid on defense, while freshman Taylor Spence gave Wichita Falls problems all night in the midfield.
