Eagles swim team soars in Fort Worth

The Decatur High School swimming program is only a month old, but it continues to put up veteran-type results. The Eagles' small, but talented, team stopped by Fort Worth's Wilkerson Grimes Coliseum for a quad meet against Fort Worth ISD schools.

There was nothing small about the second meet ever for the Decatur High School swim team. The Eagles accounted for just 11 of the 500 entries at the Grapevine/Colleyville Invitational last weekend.

Wise County sent four contestants to the National High School Finals Rodeo in Farmington, N.M., a week ago and although none of the four was satisfied with their performance, tie down roper Chris Demases of Boyd came home with an 11th place overall average out of 137 competitors.

The athletes of Decatur High School proved this year that even in a "down" year their program is the most successful in Wise County. Despite winning just two district championships this year, Decatur for the sixth year in a row won the Wise County Cup title.

Chico athletic director Pete Hart did not have to look far to get a new volleyball coach. He interviewed Brent Hand a little more than a week ago and on Thursday the school board approved hiring the 31-year-old coach.

It's sure to be a wet and wild weekend in San Antonio as hundreds of pool sharks will be invading the Palo Alto College Natatorium searching for gold. Wise County will be a part of the action as 13 members of the AquaRACERS competitive swim team will be on hand for the 2008 Texas Amateur Athletic Federation's swimming state championships.

The Fit N Wise AquaRACERS swim team made the short trip to Denton last week for its final tune-up meet of the summer before the competition really heats up. The group did not disappoint first-year coach Nancy Wendell as her large group returned to Wise County with dozens of medals for their performances.

Wise County has lost several successful coaches in recent weeks. Boyd girls basketball coach Arnold Parker left for Northwest after nine regional appearances, and Alvord coach Curtis Enis was reassigned last week after winning two state championships in cross country as well as turning the basketball and track programs into state powers.

Decatur coach Claire Rose has set this year's Lady Eagle Volleyball camp for June 16-20 at the high school. The camp for girls who have are beginning grades 3-6 will run from 8-11 a.m., and for those who are beginning grades 7-9 will run from noon-3 p.m. For more information, call Rose at (214) 418-6678.

Alvord ISD, in a surprise move last week, reassigned longtime girls coach Curtis Enis. The decision was announced after school was released last Friday when his three coaching positions were posted on a coaching Web site on graduation day.

BATTLE PLAN - County Judge Bill McElhaney has called a special meeting of Wise County Commissioners for Thursday afternoon to discuss how to oppose the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality's planned addition of Wise County to the nine-county Metroplex "non-attainment" zone for air quality. Judge McElhaney said he will also invite the county's mayors, economic development corporation chairmen, city managers and industry representatives to the meeting set for 1:30 p.m. at the Wise County Law Enforcement Center.
