Mind your manners in stores

With the holidays quickly approaching we need to get back to the basics, which is manners.

Programs make day even more special

Remember when Veterans Day (Nov. 11) was called "Armistice Day" or "Remembrance Day?" Well, I will remember this past Veterans Day for years to come no matter what you call it because it was truly "a day to remember."

GOP consuming itself

It isn't unusual for wild animals caught in a trap to chew through a leg to escape, in effect handicapping itself for life. The late great Republican Party, of which I was once a proud and practicing member, has became hooked on the horns of a dilemma and has found itself in a trap of its own making.

Eagles get A for effort

Dear Decatur Eagle varsity football team, Thank you for the privilege of watching a group of young men that know and execute the meaning of teamwork.

Sacrifice great regardless of war

Many thanks to Mandy and Joe Duty for the fine article they put together in tribute to our veterans. One correction Mandy, from the time one raises his "hand" (not hat) to take the oath of allegiance, he never knows what will happen.

Thanks for donations

Fly Without Wings Equine Center wishes to thank all 4-H clubs, businesses, restaurants, private donors and volunteers, including Sherry Cross Peters and children and Marilyn Cross, for all the donations of food for the auction, money and time at the recent fundraiser.

The socialists are coming

I think Willis Webb's recent editorial on disrespect and incivility toward the president has completely missed the boat. Or is it intended misdirection on his part? Instead of addressing the symptom, he should more accurately address the cause.

Thanks for the warning

I would like to thank the men that stopped at my house, 3900 block of Old Decatur Road, on Nov. 2, to warn me that my house was on fire.

Granger should reconsider vote

An unprecedented victory for our great country occurred Nov. 7. A bipartisan majority of the House of Representatives made history by passing H.R. 3962, the Affordable Health Care for America Act.

Is Hughes a neocon?

The Messenger has been running diatribe from a Mr. Hughes, who keeps referring to anyone who has a different political opinion than his as a neocon. He rants about the Bush administration being dishonest and causing all the problems. He says anyone who supported President Bush is a neocon.

Thanks for road work

I would like to thank the Alvord Precinct 2 barn employees and Commissioner Kevin Burns for the recent road maintenance on County Road 2485.

DISD needs right priorities

I hope the defeat of the school bond in Decatur this week doesn't leave the impression that somehow voters don't want to do what's best for the kids in our schools. To the contrary, I think this result speaks volumes for what I know I think and I believe others do, too. I "get it" that the district can use 100 percent of the funds from the issuance of bonds toward actual projects, but my problem is what we're being asked to spend that money toward.

Get back to basics

Election results for DISD bond proposition, 544 for, 883 against, should be considered a re-sounding "no confidence" vote.

Something stinks

Once again we learn that gas well operators refuse to do the "right thing." Last week it was reported that the town of DISH has some serious air quality issues due to gas well activity. The cancer causing toxins that were discovered were above what is considered safe levels.

Team deserved more coverage

Just a few things about the Decatur horse judging team. These girls, along with Mr. Allsup have worked together for two years. He has spent endless hours with them.

Charity is obligation of people, not government

It is better to remain quiet and have people thought you a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. Such a quote must be foreign to Ken Hughes after his rant in the Oct. 29 issue of the Wise County Messenger.

Residents help stop purse snatcher

Jim and Stefanie Nation of Wise County are to be commended for being good Samaritans and quick thinkers. They witnessed a young male grab a woman's purse in the Target parking lot in Watauga.

President not under influence of Antichrist

I read the letter from Ted Shaw with outrage, even though I also wanted to laugh. It was one of the most ridiculous and insulting things I've seen in my 89 years.

Board declares certain youth ineligible

On Monday night, Aug. 10, a decision was made by the Wise County Youth Fair Board to exclude children of divorced families by not allowing them to participate in the Wise County Youth Fair. The children targeted were ones that live with one parent in Wise County and live and go to school with a parent in another county. The parents have joint custody. Families of these divorced children do live in Wise County, own businesses in Wise County, work in Wise County and pay taxes in Wise County. In ad

Thanks for the learning experience

Hats off to the teachers and staff at Decatur Intermediate. Your sixth grade science day at Black Creek Lake was amazing.
