Disappointing Republicans
By Derek Worlow | Published Sunday, October 26, 2008
As an American, I have been saddened and shaken by the turn several local and national Republicans have made in order to save their sinking ship.
Call God by correct no
By Bonnie J. Neal | Published Sunday, October 26, 2008
Regarding Marc Moore's letter - yes, resoundingly yes. Those who are watching all the news, are you sure this is the society you want your grandchildren dealing with?
Obama: The anti-divider
By Ken Hughes | Published Sunday, October 26, 2008
It's rare for one to smile all the way through the opinion section of any paper, but the Wise County Messenger's Thursday Oct. 16 issue sure turned the trick for me.
Maintain our roads
By Jerry Howard | Published Sunday, October 26, 2008
Shortly after the primaries, Skip Nichols, I assume from his new digs in the far Northwest, wrote to the Messenger regarding the voters turning out the incumbent commissioner for Precinct 1. He all but implied that the good folks in Precinct 1 are hard to please!
Experienced and qualified
By Mikel Richardson | Published Sunday, October 26, 2008
I have walked the walk for almost eight years. I know what it takes to run a successful precinct. My opponent can only talk about it.
Help for the middle class
By Sharon Wilson | Published Sunday, October 26, 2008
For eight years, 95 percent of us - the ever-dwindling middle class - have had our wealth redistributed to the top 5 percent by tax cuts for the rich that never trickled down, billions in taxpayer funded corporate welfare programs and flatlined wages.
Politics can be dirty
By Bill Smith | Published Sunday, October 26, 2008
Politics can be a dirty thing. There is a bucket of mud to throw if one chooses. I have made an effort not to dip my hands into the bucket because my hands could get dirty in the process and some of it may never wash off.
McCain's sleazy campaign will fail
By Veda Sherman | Published Sunday, October 26, 2008
In a few more days we will elect a Democratic president who believes America is "ready for a change." Eighty-one percent of Americans say our leaders have put America on the wrong path.
Fundraiser was a success
By Jo Beth and Mark Southard | Published Thursday, October 23, 2008
Sarah's Cure was a huge success, and we attribute it to this amazing community that we live in with amazing family, friends and businesses.
Democrats to blame for crisis
By Ted H. Shaw | Published Thursday, October 23, 2008
Fact - Beginning with President Theodore Roosevelt and continuing through LBJ, Carter and accelerated by the Clinton administration, home foreclosures for sub-prime loans became a reality.
We have to make do despite tax increases
By James Newby | Published Thursday, October 23, 2008
More local tax increases. Wise County has allowed another property tax increase by not lowering the county property tax rate. The county handed out some pretty big pay raises last year. Now they are wanting more money.
Be aware of domestic violence
By Pat Slayton | Published Thursday, October 23, 2008
Thousands of concerned citizens across Texas will recognize October 2008 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). The goal of DVAM is to increase public awareness about the realities of domestic violence and encourage all individuals to take action by being an important part of preventing violence before it occurs.
It's a matter of obedience
By Marc Moore | Published Thursday, October 23, 2008
Folks, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but we as a self-proclaimed Christian nation have got it all wrong.
Write-in candidate is no joke
By Dr. Jimmy L. Horner | Published Thursday, October 23, 2008
I would like to take this opportunity to encourage the citizens of Wise and Jack counties to give serious consideration to casting their votes for the Independent, write-in candidate, Clint Phillips, in the upcoming election for district attorney.
There is justice after all
By Ron Sharp | Published Thursday, October 23, 2008
D.A. Sharpe, a former county Republican chairman, states that he is supporting the GOP (not surprisingly) because he is tired of the CEOs of bankrupt companies getting their multi-million dollar golden parachutes and he doesn't trust the Democrats to fix the problem.
Obama has makings of the antichrist
By Isabella Rose | Published Sunday, October 19, 2008
In my previous letter to the editor, I did not include a title. So, the title "Obama is the antichrist," was done for me, I am assuming by the Messenger staff.
I will walk the walk
By Bill Smith | Published Sunday, October 19, 2008
I have had the great pleasure to meet and speak with many good folks over the past few weeks. I was at a meeting of concerned and involved citizens through democracy who were there to make a tough choice on increased taxation in Newark and compromise on the library hours and salaries to cover the deficit.
Look to the future
By Ken Hughes | Published Sunday, October 19, 2008
Living in the past is not a strategy for the future. Living in the past is a roadblock to progress and the future.
A grateful tribute
By Steve Summers | Published Sunday, October 19, 2008
I was saddened this week to see that Joel Bennett Hurley passed away in Dallas. I met Mr. Hurley in 1996 at the time the Decatur Community Hospital was looking for property on which to expand.
Edge of reform
By Trish New | Published Sunday, October 19, 2008
Since we are no doubt on the brink of major national financial reform, I found it interesting to note that in the mid-1800s some writers had a pretty good handle on the "axis of evil" and had the audacity to write about it.
Vote for the candidate, not the party
By Tony Mooney | Published Sunday, October 19, 2008
As a GOP supporter, I agree with D.A. Sharpe and the desire to vote straight GOP for the coming election at the federal level. Never before have we, as a people, been flim flammed by a candidate with such a weak pedigree as Barack Obama.
Obama is the anti-christ
By Isabella Rose | Published Thursday, October 16, 2008
Dear Veda, Sharon and Ron,
Obviously you fit right in with liberal Americans and Barack Obama.
A turning point for America
By Ted H. Shaw | Published Thursday, October 16, 2008
By definition, socialism is the belief that the government should own businesses on behalf of the people and that everyone should be equal, i.e. wealth redistribution.
Who is the best candidate?
By Virginia Miller | Published Thursday, October 16, 2008
I am not one who typically writes a letter to the editor, but I feel the upcoming election is going to affect our nation drastically!
Research trumps say-so
By Duanne Pichler | Published Thursday, October 16, 2008
A new Military Times poll shows military personnel support McCain over Obama by a margin of 3 to 1. A recent Gallup poll shows military personnel support McCain over Obama by a margin of nearly 2 to 1.
I'm voting straight GOP
By D.A. Sharpe | Published Thursday, October 16, 2008
As the immediate past chairman of the Wise County Republican Party, my interest and passion still is for the political structures of our nation and for the good of "we the people" in Wise County.
What's up with higher gas prices?
By Steve Baker | Published Thursday, October 16, 2008
As I was driving home from work in Fort Worth to the beautiful city of Decatur I was noticing the gas prices. As I pass several stations I see prices at a low of $2.78 to the average of $2.99.
Let's agree to disagree
By Audrey Dyer | Published Thursday, October 16, 2008
In reply to Veda Sherman's latest letter to the editor:
Mrs. Sherman, we could probably go back and forth on this subject until Election Day. This I will not do. Your thoughts are yours and mine are mine.
Challenge issued to McCain/Palin
By Ron Sharp | Published Thursday, October 16, 2008
John McCain says the Ayers issue with Obama is a matter of honesty. He is absolutely right. It shows how dishonest McCain and Sarah Palin are.
Night Out was a treat
By Kellye Souther | Published Sunday, October 12, 2008
I would like to thank those responsible for the National Night Out on the square in Decatur. What a great way to teach our children about safety and for them to learn to trust and look up to our police and firemen.
Thanks for returning phone
By Dee Baumgardner | Published Sunday, October 12, 2008
On Tues., Sept. 30, I went to the Decatur Wal-Mart around noon. Somewhere between my car and inside the store I dropped my cell phone. When I noticed it was gone, I checked where I had been in the store and my car, no phone.
WC won't run out of water
By James M. Parks | Published Sunday, October 12, 2008
Thank you for the recent article about the Region C Water Planning Group's study of water supplies in Parker and Wise counties. I was disappointed, however, to read the grossly inaccurate headline and lead paragraph suggesting that Wise County cities may run out of water by 2030.
Thanks for the kindness
By Barbara Ball | Published Sunday, October 12, 2008
I would like to praise the Decatur High School auto shop. Mr Ricky Stutt, Scott Rowe and Kelly Moore came to my aid when I needed an alternator for my van.
Parade was a joy
By Terri L. Johnson | Published Sunday, October 12, 2008
Hats off to Kim Redman and all those who helped with the Alvord homecoming parade. It was pure joy to be invited and to participate in this year's event.
It's a serious decision
By Ron Sharp | Published Sunday, October 12, 2008
OK, I admit it. I've had fun pulling a few chains on the election, but now I want to get serious. Maybe it's the "Socialist Kool-aid" or something, but I really want all of us to set aside the petty bickering and verbal jabs.
Give us recognition
By Yvonne Ashlaock | Published Sunday, October 12, 2008
Do female athletes deserve recognition? Yes, they do! I totally have to agree with Marie James' letter to the editor. I'd really like for the Wise County Messenger to answer the above question.
King is confused
By Larry Kasper | Published Sunday, October 12, 2008
Phil King is really confused!
He authored HB4051. He authored HB4052. His bill became SB1983 forwarded by Sen. Craig Estes.
Hartley's record fair discussion
By Scott Gates | Published Thursday, October 9, 2008
I am happy to see people standing up for their beliefs and those who they believe in, however I am saddened by the attempts of the Wise County Active Democrats to make our current county attorney look bad since a deal between the two parties and candidates could not be reached. I have one question.
Country can't afford McCain
By Ron Sharp | Published Thursday, October 9, 2008
There is no doubt that John McCain went through hell in Vietnam. So did thousands of other dedicated American soldiers. That does not make him a great leader. His loyalty to Bush/Cheney says far more than his self-proclaimed status as a "maverick." His recent tactics in Washington were a shameful display of politics at its very worst.
Should jewelry matter?
By Sharon Wilson | Published Thursday, October 9, 2008
I made a mistake in my recent letter. I meant the near 70 months, not seven months, spent in the wrong war in Iraq would foot the entire bill for the financial bailout.
Look for a big change Nov. 4
By Veda Sherman | Published Thursday, October 9, 2008
In reply to Audrey Dyer, I do not personally know John McCain or Sarah Palin (nor do I care to), but I do know his record in Washington (I listen to the news). You say you go by "what you hear in the news." Surely you question some of the rhetoric from the news media.
McCain questions
By Duanne Pichler | Published Sunday, October 5, 2008
Sharon Wilson has distorted the facts in her recent submission to Your Views in the Wise County Messenger. This close to the election it is time to get down to a factual discussion of who is best suited to lead our country rather than spew forth bias and distortions.
Two terms are enough
By Ron Sharp | Published Sunday, October 5, 2008
Now we have Michael Bloomberg trying to bypass the voters' wishes by having the New York city council override a term limit provision imposed by the voters of New York City so he can run for a third term.
Special interest groups limit change
By Randall O. Watson | Published Sunday, October 5, 2008
Change is now the big political buzzword. There is no doubt that we are stuck in the same old pattern. No matter how it is wrapped or what package it is put in or the label on the outside, it is still going to be the same old Washington politics inside.
On Barack Obama
By Brad Logan | Published Sunday, October 5, 2008
It is very revealing that Mr. Barack Hussein Obama is OK with wearing a bracelet honoring a soldier but had a problem wearing a pin honoring the nation that soldier died for.
Girls athletes deserve recognition
By Marie James | Published Sunday, October 5, 2008
Does your sports writer have a problem with Decatur female athletes?
McCain will ruin the U.S.A.
By Sharon Wilson | Published Thursday, October 2, 2008
A McCain presidency would be a continuation of the disastrously failed ideology of the past eight years. For verification, check his rubber-stamp voting record, his dishonest campaign, his military only solutions to foreign policy issues and his lack of judgment in picking a running mate.
Reader opposes bailout
By Jackie Juntti | Published Thursday, October 2, 2008
I, Jackie Juntti, as an independent citizen, a singular sovereign, capable of making my own decisions and living within my means, do hereby state, firmly and with the utmost conviction, that I oppose the financial bailout of any financial institution during this time of economic crisis.
A letter to a reader
By Audrey Dyer | Published Thursday, October 2, 2008
To Veda Sherman:
Reading your letter to the editor makes me think that you know John McCain and Sarah Palin personally. If you do, then I am barking up the wrong tree.
Do your own research
By Isabella Rose | Published Thursday, October 2, 2008
I would like to make a few comments regarding the letter written by Mr. Sharp about Sen. McCain and the election. Your comment about Sen. McCain being a rubber stamp for Bush is highly inaccurate.
A further explanation
By Ron Sharp | Published Thursday, October 2, 2008
I recently wrote an open letter to John McCain criticizing his selection of Sarah Palin as running mate.

Whoa!
It could only be explained as pandemonium Friday morning as Wal-Mart associates unveiled their special Black Friday items at 5 a.m. Shoppers grab as many boxes as they can carry.
