Single-payer is Americas only hope
By Ken Hughes | Published Sunday, October 4, 2009
Americans, at least those with a modicum of humanity left in their personal standards, should be outraged at the actions of the so-called "health insurance industry."
Biblical curriculum is necessary
By Melinda Buchanan | Published Thursday, October 1, 2009
Regarding Brandon Evans' commentary on the Bible in the classroom: as a Texas high school English teacher, I applaud the move, though I deplore the lack of funding or guidelines for training. It isn't about religion - it's about understanding the literature and Western Civilization.
Grateful for help in wake of accident
By Laura J. Jeanne | Published Sunday, September 27, 2009
This is going to sound like an Academy Award acceptance speech, and for that, I apologize. But, be that as it may, I'd like to extend my thanks to a great number of people. I was thrown from a horse in May and broke four vertebra, five ribs and an elbow, resulting in me being a paraplegic. The wealth of love, support, prayers, hard work and donations has overwhelmed me.
Thanks for supporting fundraiser
By Jim Steinhauer | Published Sunday, September 27, 2009
The Cottondale Volunteer Fire Department wishes to thank all for your support of our fundraiser on Sept. 19.
Choice for schools name is appropriate
By Ann Kaker | Published Sunday, September 27, 2009
I was overjoyed today when I saw in the Update that the new elementary school was going to be named Young in honor of Allen Ray and Nelda Young for their many years of service to the Decatur school district. I know that I am only one of many, many former students of these two great people who celebrate their recognition.
Support appreciated
By Chris Miller | Published Thursday, September 24, 2009
On behalf of the Bridgeport Main Street advisory board, I'd like to express my heartfelt thanks for Decatur Main Street and the merchants on the square for the maroon bows adorning the lamp posts in downtown Decatur.
Some Americans stuck in racist past
By Ken Hughes | Published Thursday, September 24, 2009
On May 17, 1954, the United States Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education unanimously outlawed imposed racial segregation in public schools anywhere in the United States.
Holocaust reference insensitive
By Matthew Van Hoose | Published Thursday, September 24, 2009
I recently had the opportunity to read the Sept. 13 letter to the editor from Gerald Groves. In this letter, Mr. Groves comments that the city of Bridgeport's annexation efforts are creating an "Auschwitz II" at the Acme Brick plant west of town.
America is fed up
By D. S. Hughes | Published Thursday, September 24, 2009
I can't imagine why the president and Congress don't get it. Americans are angry with our elected officials and corporate America. We, the people, are fed up!
Where are our values
By William Lambert | Published Thursday, September 24, 2009
This is the third letter or opinion I have written. Like the others it is an opinion, not meant to offend anyone. I have yet to get a letter printed.
Disagreement do not equal racism
By Rose Stuber | Published Sunday, September 20, 2009
I would like to respond to Ms. Weldon. Being intellectual and articulate is merely a facade. It does not represent what truly is in a person's heart. Mary and Joseph were simple people, yet they were chosen by God to be the human parents of Jesus. The apostles (hand-picked by Jesus himself) were largely a rough crowd with little education.
Best wishes to Bridgeport families
By Belinda Sherman | Published Sunday, September 20, 2009
I was so delighted to see the beautiful picture of Becca Logan in the newspaper being crowned as the Bridgeport homecoming queen.
Thanks for help
By Jammie Vaughn | Published Sunday, September 20, 2009
On Aug. 23, I had to call 911. My husband had blacked out, and I needed help. This letter is to say thank you to the Decatur EMTs and the Decatur firemen who responded very quickly. The EMTs did their job quickly and with great respect to both my husband and myself. Thank you.
Elected officials have no respect for citizens
By Gerald Groves | Published Sunday, September 13, 2009
With the recent illegal annexations along West Main Street in West Bridgeport, the mayor and city council have once again shown that there is no respect for the oath of office taken by these individuals.
Evil is in the heart of accusers
By Carole Weldon | Published Sunday, September 13, 2009
Not since the 1960s and the days of the Klan have I witnessed such hatred, venomous lies and unchristian behavior by so-called intellectuals and Christians.
Remember public servants when critcizing
By Mike Gregory | Published Thursday, September 10, 2009
As a public servant I always find budget time to be very interesting. It's amazing how even in good economic times - this is not one obviously - there are people complaining about taxes.
Richardson was untruthful
By Mark York | Published Thursday, September 10, 2009
In response to Mr. Richardson's recent letter to the editor you are so untruthful in so many ways I do not know where to start. The fact is that you were fully aware of the racist history about the lake accesses in Newark and you even brought it up at the last county commissioner's court meeting I attended.
Wise County did not honor Sen. Kennedy
By Seth Foster | Published Thursday, September 10, 2009
Anyone notice that many of Wise County's flags remained at full-staff two weeks ago, after the passing of Sen. Edward Kennedy and after a directive from Gov. Perry to lower the flags?
Self-willed ignorance spreading
By Ken Hughes | Published Thursday, September 10, 2009
The trouble with the world is not that people know too little, it's that they know so many things that just aren't so.
