I am almost 88 years old and a one-time resident of Wise County. I have seen a lot of things in my years, but John McCain's choice of the Alaska governor has made me angry at the hypocrisy.
If she had run in the Republican primaries for president, her lack of experience (none in national and international matters) would have been a big issue. McCain would have criticized her for it. How dare the Republicans say anything about Barack Obama's experience now?
Worse, she is a moralistic scold, more "righteous and Christian" than others, a moral example for us all, they say. What kind of a mother, having a new baby with Down's syndrome, tells us she will be campaigning full-time and will be a full-time vice president, sticking the new baby with others to nurture on a full-time basis, while the mother pursues her ambitions? What kind of "family values" is that?
What is the message to middle and low income women? "You, too, can have a Down's syndrome baby, as long as you are a well-to-do Republican elite with a husband working for British Petroleum who can have other people take care of and nurture the special child while you go get famous and important!
This goes well with the "family values" message of McCain himself. Get involved with a younger, prettier, wealthier girlfriend during your first marriage, dump the older accident-disfigured wife who waited for you when you were a P.O.W. and marry your mistress before the ink is dry on your divorce decree.
If all this was true of Barack and Michelle Obama, the hypocritical Republicans would be going crazy attacking them for the poor parenting and family values they had shown. Any honest person knows this is true. For the Bush-Cheney-Karl Rove Republicans to present John McCain and the self-righteous, unethical Alaskan governor as a model of "family values and moral superiority" makes me mad!
