Vote for change and progress
By Alfred Sanchez

It never ceases to amaze me, when I listen to talk radio for amusement, how the radio hosts are in the pockets of the Republican Party. Just listen to them - they care more about the Republican Party than about America.

Religious freedom is guaranteed
By Gary Jeffyres

Ken Hughes said, "Racism was repudiated at the very beginning by the phrase all men are created equal. It's disheartening that so many Americans can't seem to accept that idea and choose instead to argue over freedom of religion, a phrase that does not appear anywhere in the Declaration or Constitution."

Sickened by American politics

I've had as much as I can take of 21st century American politics, so much so in fact that I'm seriously contemplating returning to the political position I maintained up until 1979 when I was totally apolitical.
Davis should focus on real issues
By Misty Petty
Published Sunday, May 4, 2008
I think that Brandon Davis of Rhome is worrying way too much about what the mayor is telling the media. The media keeps citizens updated on what is going on in their town. He needs to start dealing with the real issues in the town like growth and things that will help the city.

Get a grip, Sharon Wilson

Sharon Wilson no doubt has a Democrat agenda. What a long reach and what a vulgar choice of words about McCain, and before the same children she purportedly is trying to protect. Get a grip.

Sign was distasteful
By Pat Privitt
Published Thursday, April 24, 2008
I am not generally a proponent of "political correctness" but the recent photo in the Wise County Messenger of the restaurant marquee was distinctly distasteful (no pun intended). I cannot believe a business would post something like that, much less that the paper would think it worthy of printing.

Each year, the second week in April is dedicated to telecommunicators. Congress made the National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week proclamation official in the early 1990s because the telecommunicators are the first point of contact, the unseen first responders, with the public.

I would like to ask drivers to be aware of motorcycles during these warmer months. Most of you know how dangerous the highways are in Wise County. It is bad enough when you have an accident in a car, but your chances of survival on a motorcycle are a lot less.
Let the people vote!
By Randall Watson

Someone didn't plan ahead
By Chuck Skinner
Published Thursday, April 10, 2008
Let's see now, we have a wonderful new highway that is ready to open and no signs. That reminds me of how long it took for signs after completion of the turn around in front of James Wood Motors. Do I see "signs" of a pattern here? Gee, plan ahead must not be in the master plan.
Vote for progress
By Ken Hughes
Published Sunday, April 6, 2008
In the coming election, America desperately needs to return to its late, great days of progressive government. America must escape the far-right conservative "Family Values" holier-than-thou politicos who claim divine inspiration and direction from above while diverting the nation's attention from their nefarious activities and insider deals all done to satisfy their narcissism and political and especially economic gain.

My friend and colleague, Marilyn Belew, is running for the office of Wise County Attorney. I first met Ms. Belew almost 15 years ago when she worked at the Tarrant County District Attorney's Office. In the intervening years, she built a thriving practice in Decatur representing citizens in both civil and criminal proceedings.
Time to get out of Iraq

Published Sunday, March 30, 2008
Roman poet Quintus Horatius Flaccus, 65 BC- 8 BC, better known as Horace, wrote "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori," or "It is sweet and right to die for your country." Later toastmasters spiced it up a bit; "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori, sed dulcius pro patria vivere, et dulcissimum pro patria bibere. Ergo, bibamus pro salute patriae," or "It is sweet to die for the homeland, but it is sweeter to live for the homeland, and the sweetest to drink for it. Therefore, let us drink to the health of the homeland."
America needs spiritual movement
By Diane Hughes

I found Ken Hughes' editiorial "States aren't so united after all" very inspiring. My family on my father's side came to America in 1736 because of religious persecution. My daughter-in-law's family came for the same reason, religious persecution.
Racism is a problem
By Gary Demmitt
Published Sunday, March 30, 2008
Billy Graham has stated that one of the biggest problems our nation faces is racism. Racism is defined as prejudice in regard to a certain race. It is without a doubt a problem in America today. But I am convinced the knife cuts both ways, and the problem of racism is not simply one sided. We are in the midst of a political firestorm that is born of racism.

States aren't so united afterall
By Ken Hughes
Published Sunday, March 23, 2008
It would be great to have a platform from which to remind all Americans that this 221-year constitutional republic of ours has always been billed as the United States of America; however, watching all the shenanigans, sloganeering and political xenophobia of the late 20th and early 21st-century political parties, I am beginning to wonder about the United part.

Road is safe: Driver was not
By Pat Privitt

Why must we cry "safety hazard" and call for the expense to taxpayers by adding railings to a perfectly safe road as Keeter (FM 2048)? The accident occurring there recently was obviously not due to that stretch of road but simply because the driver was not paying attention to her driving as she should have been.

Managed healthcare is bad
By Manshadow Waylett
Published Sunday, March 2, 2008
Mr. Hughes, you don't want a federally managed healthcare system, no matter how your imagination is swayed by Hillary and Obama. You are strong on criticism and statistics about the failings of free enterprise to deliver universal care but short on specific remedies. Surely, no one wants the British or Canadian model as an option.

We need King
By Ann Williams
Published Thursday, February 28, 2008
I have no problem with differing opinions. I do have a very real problem with distortion, innuendo, halftruths and outright lies. In the political arena, unfortunately, this is all too common. In the race for Texas State Representative District 61 an honorable man and very effective incumbent has been subjected to each of these.
I'll vote for King

Universal healthcare is inevitable
By Ken Hughes

The topic of universal healthcare has reverberated through the Messenger's opinion columns of late. Vote for Phil King
By George Parker
Published Sunday, February 24, 2008
In 2006, conservative and family value voters did not show up at the polls and we got a government that does not support our values. It is time for us to stand up and be counted. Don't vote for King
By Jay Graham
Published Sunday, February 24, 2008
The election for state representative is not a complex issue. The voters have an incumbent who has taken a massive amount of campaign funds from outside his district from special interest groups. GOP must go from office
By Ken Hughes

On our way to a new president, Americans need to take a look first at our position in today's world, then the recent past and then further back. That's the only way to get an idea of the course America needs to chart if we are to have even a small chance to recover America's traditional course through history and restore our nation both internally and externally.
