Funeral for Mayfield Workman, 92, of Arlington will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 2, at the First United Methodist Church in Arlington with burial at Moore Memorial Gardens. Visitation was to be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Moore Funeral Home in Arlington.
Workman died Monday, June 29, 2009, in Arlington.
Born April 1, 1917, in Decatur to Charlie May and Alice McCormack Workman, he graduated from Decatur High School. He served in the Army Air Corps, attended Decatur Baptist College and graduated from North Texas State College in Denton. He was inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Hall of Honor in 1969 and later served on its board. He was also inducted into the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association Hall of Honor, an award named after him is presented each year to the outstanding football player in the Metroplex. Mayfield Workman Junior High in Arlington ISD was named after him, and he was the head coach of the 1951 Arlington High School 2A state championship football team. He received the AHS Alumni Association Distinguished Colt Choice Award in 2006. He was a charter member and past president of the Greater Arlington Lions Club, was a Mason for more than 50 years and served as president of men's Bible class at the First United Methodist Church of Arlington. He also served on the board of directors at the church and was involved with the United Way and YMCA.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Agnes Welch; brother, Calvin Workman; and son-in-law, Bryant Copeland.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Sterling Goodwin Workman; son, Rusty Workman and wife, Margaret; daughters, Pam Copeland and Pat Shelton and husband, Kim; grandchildren, Chris Workman and wife, Michelle, Allison Workman, Jennifer Andrews and husband, Jason, Amy Hayes and husband, Lane, Sarah Shelton and Katelin Shelton; great-grandchildren, Jake Workman, Dane Workman, Mayfield Hayes, Taylor Hayes and Copeland Hayes; and cousin, Bill Griggs and wife, Lavada, of Decatur.
