| Funeral for William "Bill" Lunsford Griggs, 90, of Decatur was Oct. 19 at the Coker Funeral Home Chapel with Monte Tuttle officiating. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery. |
Griggs died Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009, in Bridgeport.
Born April 30, 1919, in Decatur to Dan and Myrtle (Workman) Griggs, he attended Decatur High School from 1935-1939 and played football and ran track. He was a three-year captain of the Decatur Eagles football team. He played football at Decatur Baptist College. He served in World War II, serving four years in Company E, 176th Engineers, where he earned the rank of master sergeant along with numerous medals and commendations.
Griggs married Lavada Lee Gage after the war. He was a member of numerous booster clubs and service organizations. He served as president of the Nimitz High School Booster Club, the Irving Girls Softball Association and was instrumental in building the Southwest Park girls softball fields in Irving. He was a member of the Decatur planning and zoning commission, the Decatur Athletic Booster Club and Central Fellowship Church.
He worked in the oil and gas industry his entire career, working for Shell Oil Co. for 10 years and as plant manager of the Dallas Texaco plant for 37 years. He also hunted, worked on his farm, raised cattle and traveled.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Lavane Griggs, and brothers, C.W. "Dud" and Jim Griggs.
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Melinda Kaye Reeves and husband, Jack, of Decatur; grandsons, Josh William and Jase Ryan Reeves; sister-in-law, Roberta Buchanan of Decatur; and numerous nieces and nephews. |
