| Graveside service for Wilma LaVerne (Smith) Kennedy, 93, of Rotan was Sept. 13 at Belvieu Cemetery in Rotan with Charles Glidewell officiating. |
Kennedy died Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, in Rotan.
Born Nov. 24, 1915, in Clifton to Burtrand Daley and Ella Tison (Ford) Smith, she was raised in Decatur and graduated from Decatur High School. She received a bachelor of science degree from Decatur Baptist College and a home economics degree from Texas State College for Women in Denton. She married Norvelle Kennedy Sr. March 4, 1945, in Decatur.
She taught at Hobbs High School for one year and Rotan High School for 42 years, retiring in 1980. She cooked and sewed and won best of show in sewing at the West Texas Fair several times. She researched genealogy and was active in several organizations, including Delta Kappa Gamma, Daughters of the American Revolution (Anne Pettus Shelbourne Chapter) and the Texas Retired Teachers Association. She attended the First Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a brother, B.D. Smith; and a sister, Ella Mae Cagle.
She is survived by her son, Norvelle Kennedy Jr. and wife, Donna, of Lubbock; grandchildren, Katie Hendley and husband, Roy, Byron Kennedy and wife, Lindsay, and Lauren McWilliams and husband, Klay; and great-grandchildren, Tate Hendley and Tucker McWilliams.
Pallbearers were Bobby Gruben, Glenn Copeland, Carroll Brown, Mark Jordan, Carl Jordan, Donnie Gruben, Jim Gruben and Ted Posey. |
