Chisholm Trail Days, Juneteenth celebrations this weekend

Decatur will be celebrating history this weekend with several events planned for Friday and Saturday.

Chisholm Trail Days, celebrating Decatur's western heritage, begins with a CASA benefit concert from 7 p.m. to midnight Friday at Ruben's Ballroom. The J.D. Clark and Ed Burleson Bands will perform.

Tickets are $20 at the door, and all proceeds will benefit the abused and neglected children of Wise County. For more information, call Pat Reed at (940) 627-7535.

The CASA Speak Up For Kids 5K Race is 9 a.m. Saturday. Adults run for $20 and children 12 and under run for $15. Late registration is $25 for adults and $20 for children. Proceeds benefit the children served by CASA of Wise County.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., a Kids Rodeo Play Day will be held at the Wise County Sheriff's Posse Arena.

Numerous events and activities will be held around the square from 2 to 11 p.m. including a petting zoo, fun jump, train rides, pony rides and photos, hay rides, stagecoach rides, carriage rides, kids games and activities.

There will also be artisans, western handcrafts and pioneer vendors, a chuckwagon exhibition and live music throughout the day.

Scheduled events also include an old-fashioned ice cream contest at 2 p.m., performances by the Lone Star Legacy Gunfighters at 2:30 and 4, a kids stickhorse rodeo at 3, an open fiddle competition at 4, a hamburger supper with Dutch oven peach cobbler for dessert at 6 and a street dance featuring Jake Hooker and the Outsiders from 7 to 11 p.m.

Homemade ice cream contest participants should be in front of Floors and More by 1:30 p.m. Awards will be given for best overall adult, best overall youth and most unusual. For information, call Kristi Cross at (940) 626-2099.

Juneteenth activities

A Juneteenth parade will begin at 6 p.m. Friday on Trinity Street under the U.S. 380 bypass and travel south to the square, west on Walnut to U.S. 81/287 Business, then back east on Main Street to the train depot.

Anyone interested in being in or volunteering to help with the parade should call Robert Johnson at (940) 210-4532.

On Saturday, the Decatur East Side Alumni will host a Juneteenth celebration from noon to 9 p.m. at Willis Park. For information, call Mike Bell at (940) 390-9104.
