The amount, which is down from $311,530 in 2008, will be distributed among several United Way organizations covering seven counties, including United Way of Wise County.
"This is really outstanding. This past year has been so difficult. We were really concerned about what would happen this year. The need has not diminished - it's greater in times like these," said Martin Woodruff, executive director of United Way of Wise County. "Devon employees year after year continue to impress me and Wise County. Your commitment to improve lives in Wise County and North Texas is exemplary, and the results are heartwarming. Thank you for this outstanding result in 2009 during tough times. This is a uniquely American thing you are doing."
The United Way of Wise County has set a goal of $450,000 this year and traditionally receives a large percentage of its goal from Devon Energy.
While the amount was down this year, it wasn't because of lack of participation. Campaign chair George Jackson said that this year's campaign was strongly supported by Devon employees.
"This year, the employees bought into it. We raised more funds this year than ever by the direct participation of our employees," Jackson said. "This campaign raises money to help those in North Texas who aren't as fortunate as us. By your participation, every dollar goes to helping somebody."
Jackson also thanked the campaign committee, who began planning several fundraisers in April. Events such as a fishing tournament, clay shoot, chili cook-off and several lunches helped the committee raise money.
Jackson also thanked the Devon Energy corporation, represented by Phil Cook and Jerry Holsworth.
"The support we get from corporate is phenomenal. It's what elevates this whole campaign to levels we couldn't imagine eight years ago," Jackson said.
Jackson also thanked the Devon employees for their contributions to the campaign.
"Thank you for making this a successful campaign," he said.
