Carlton A. Bennett, 74, and his wife, Meriam Bea Bennett, 71, of Grove Hill, Ala., both died at the scene.

The driver of another vehicle involved in the crash, Judith Hatfield Lambert, 72, of McKinney was injured and taken by ground ambulance to Denton Regional Hospital. The third driver, Laura Patterson, 46, of Krum was not injured.

Department of Public Safety Trooper Greg Hair said witnesses said Lambert was westbound when her sports utility vehicle drifted into the eastbound lane where it hit the Bennetts' car head-on. Meriam Bennett was killed instantly, and Carlton Bennett, the driver, died after receiving treatment at the scene. Patterson was westbound behind Lambert's vehicle and struck Lambert's vehicle after the initial impact.

The accident happened around 8:40, and traffic was shut down in both directions for about two hours.
