| Sales tax collections by the state amounted to $1.70 billion in November, down 14.4 percent compared to November 2008. For the most part, December rebates to Wise County cities represented a drop much greater than that percentage. |
The city of Bridgeport was hit hardest, earning 62 percent less in sales tax rebates compared to November last year. Bridgeport received $170,185, compared to $453,230 in November of last year. For the year, Bridgeport has received $2.8 million, down 41 percent from the $4.7 million the city earned at this time last year.
Major declines were also felt by the cities of Chico and New Fairview, 61 percent; Paradise, 50 percent and Runaway Bay, 32 percent.
Decatur's rebate was $254,070, down 21 percent from 2008 at this time. For the year, Decatur is down 9 percent, at $3.5 million.
Two cities in the county, Aurora and Lake Bridgeport, were up for the month. Aurora's rebate of $1,723 is 66 percent more than the $1,037 the city received in November 2008. Lake Bridgeport, with a $1,190 rebate, is up 5 percent over November 2008. Every city in the county except Aurora, is down for the year.
