Custom home builder Eric Langto and his wife Laureen of Decatur have diversified their business in order to survive the anemic housing market and at the same time are providing buyers with energy saving, money saving features. They have recently expanded Langto Construction to form Earth Friendly Foam Insulation.
The water spray insulation goes on like shaving cream, Laureen said, and expands 100 percent. It creates an airtight insulation barrier. Two inches of closed-cell spray foam, which is the most dense provided by the company, has an R-value of R40 and improves the strength of the house by up to 300 percent.
Eric said customers will realize a savings up to 50 percent on monthly utility bills, resulting in a cost of less than 8 cents per square foot. The technologically advanced polyurethane foam blocks moisture, reduces noise and limits the amount of outdoor pollutants and allergens that come into the home or building. In general, he said, it makes the indoor environment healthier, more comfortable, more energy efficient and more affordable.
The Langtos were sold on the foam after seeing the difference in their comfort level and utility costs after installing it in their home. In one of their custom homes currently on display in Reatta Estates on U.S. 81/287 south of Decatur, they have used the foam, and it is easily accessible for inspection in the attic. The 2,461-square-foot home has a total of $15,000 in energy saving features, none of which have been added to the selling price of the home, said Laureen.
"The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that 40 percent of your home's energy loss is due to unwanted air infiltration," said Eric.
By preventing that loss, the Langtos feel Earth Friendly Foam is helping homeowners save money as well as growing their business.
