ROAD WORK - The Decatur downtown crosswalk project is on Trinity Street south of Main Street this week in front of the Wise County Messenger office and Messenger Office Supply. Customers can park on the south side of the building or on the south side of the Decatur Visitors Center, both located on Pecan Street.
WISE COUNTY WCID - The Wise County Water Control and Improvement District No. 1 was given a clean financial audit Tuesday, July 7. Accountant Steve Gilland said there were no issues with the district audit. The district collected $438,000 in property taxes and had a large increase in its bank account, since several large ongoing water conservation projects were not completed during the fiscal year. Directors also reviewed the recent dedication ceremony for a new site in the Big Sandy watershed and agreed the day's events went well.
CONTRACT AWARDED - The Decatur water board Tuesday awarded a $148,300 contract to Kimley-Horn Associates for design and engineering work for emergency power generators at the raw water pump station on Lake Bridgeport and the water treatment plant in the city. The estimated cost of the generators and installation is expected to be about $1.1 million. Funds for the project were part of a bond election for water system improvements approved by Decatur voters in 2007.

Komen for the cure team comprised of seven local women, will host a fundraiser at the Decatur Chili's 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 16. WATERSHED MEETING - An Eagle Mountain Lake watershed protection planning meeting is 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Friday, July 17, at the Decatur Civic Center. The meeting will include a report on pollutant source computer modeling for the watershed as well as a summary and discussion of the stakeholder survey of best management practices conducted at the January meeting. CLEAN UP - The city of Bridgeport will have a household hazardous waste collection event Saturday, July 18. Residents will be able to dispose of paint, pesticides, solvents, batteries and electronic waste, such as computers, monitors and televisions.
SOFTBALL TOURNEY - The Andy Mattison Memorial Softball Tournament (The "Mo-Morial") is Saturday, July 18, at Kenny Renshaw Park in Decatur. The cost is $200 a team, but no team will be turned away. There will be a men's division and a coed division, as well as a home run derby and horseshoe and washers tournaments. All proceeds will benefit the family of Andy Mattison.
