Boyd (6-5) 42
Pilot Point (11-0) 59
7:30 p.m., Friday, November 13, 2009 at Springtown Porcupine Stadium
Going into Friday night's bi-district game with the Pilot Point Bearcats, Boyd coach J.G. Cartwright knew his team had to do what no one has done all year - stop Jarman Johnson.

The Boyd Yellowjackets became the 11th team to fail at that task. Johnson rushed for school record 378 yards and six touchdowns, leading Pilot Point to a 59-42 victory in the Class 2A Division I Region II bi-district tilt at Springtown ISD Stadium.

"We knew going in that we would have our hands full with Johnson," Cartwright said. "He's a great back.

"I'm proud of our team," Cartwright added. "They competed. I told them they may have hung 42 points on the state champions."

The loss ended Boyd's season at 6-5. Boyd started the season 1-4 and then went on a five-game winning streak to win the District 9-2A title. The game concluded the careers of 21 Boyd seniors.

"They were a great group of seniors," Cartwright said. "I'm going to miss the heck out of them. They rededicated themselves over the open date. We made some changes and they stuck together. They knew we had a good team and the caliber of teams we had been playing."

Boyd quarterback Tim Fleming was one of the seniors ending his career. Fleming topped 1,000 yards for the season with his 172 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns. He added 164 yards through the air, completing 12 of his 18 attempts with one interception.

"I loved every minute of it," Fleming said about the season. "I hate that it's over."

Along with setting the single-game record for Pilot Point, Johnson also set a school record for rushing in a season, topping 2,200 yards.

"Jarman Johnson was remarkable," said Pilot Point coach Blake Feldt. "He set the record for yards in a single game and most yards in a season. That's phenomenal with the history of backs we've had at Pilot Point."

Led by Johnson, Pilot Point scored on all but one possession in the game. Pilot Point finished with 570 yards, including 430 rushing.

"We couldn't stop them," Fleming said. "They were too fast and too strong."

Boyd managed to stay with Pilot Point most of the game behind the tough running of Fleming and Colton Lyon. Boyd finished with 383 yards rushing. Lyon rushed for 152 yards and four touchdowns. He scored on runs of two, six, 18 and 63 yards.

With 5:28 left in the game, Boyd trailed by just three, 45-42, after Fleming's 4-yard touchdown run and his pass to Edgar Lugo on the two-point try.

Boyd tried an onside kick, but failed to get it. Boyd then could not get a stop. Taking over at the Boyd 49-yard line, Pilot Point handed the ball off to Johnson five straight times to get back to the end zone. Johnson scored from 10 yards out to extend Pilot Point's lead to 10, 52-42.

"We needed a stop and didn't get it," Cartwright said. "We didn't get many. They had it rolling."

Fleming was intercepted on the next possession, and Pilot Point capitalized with Johnson's final score from seven yards out.

Neither team had much success on defense in the first half as they combined for 49 points. Pilot Point rolled up 291 yards, including 159 yards rushing from Johnson. Boyd piled up 236 yards.

Feldt said he told his offense early that they had to score on every possession.

"We couldn't stop them," Feldt said. "It was a track meet. My hats off to Boyd. They do a great job."

Boyd struck first on a 6-yard run by Lyon to cap a 71-yard scoring drive. Boyd missed the extra-point try.

Pilot Point needed just one play to respond. Quarterback Seth Tilley connected with Mason Guthrie for a 65-yard touchdown to give Pilot Point a 7-6 lead.

Boyd marched right back down field with Lyon breaking free for a 63-yard scamper.

Ten plays later, Pilot Point regained a one-point lead with a 9-yard pass from Tilley to Justin Chambers.

After the Pilot Point defense got one of its few stops of the night, Johnson found the end zone for the first time on a 58-yard run to give Pilot Point a 21-13 lead. With the exception of a 25-yard Ruben Martinez field goal early in the fourth quarter, Johnson scored the remainder of Pilot Point's 59 points.

Boyd tied the game briefly at 21, before Pilot Point closed the half with a score. Boyd never got even again.
