There was not a lot of defensive highlights in the first half of Friday's football game between Decatur and Gainesville. Both schools were torched by big plays as they combined for nearly 700 yards of offense by halftime.
The second half, however, the Eagles regrouped and played closer to the kind of defense that head coach Kyle Story likes to see. The result: Decatur held GHS to just 60 yards in the fourth quarter and hardly broke a sweat in cruising to a 56-20 road win.
Receiver Chad Harrison was just shy of the century mark as he hauled in 95 yards of real estate. However, the senior came through in the clutch as he caught touchdown passes for 21, 13 and 11 yards to lead a spectacular night for the DHS offense.
The Eagles, who sputtered at times last week against Dallas Madison, never punted this week. Seven of their eight touchdowns came on drives of four plays or less. The performance had a lot to do with the offensive line and improvement by the receivers.
"Those guys up front deserve a lot of credit. They have played well both games so far and are getting better. They will have to keep improving because we have some games coming up against teams that are a whole lot better than Gainesville or Madison," Story said. "Last week our passing game struggled because we dropped a few passes early and it got to some of them. This week we caught those early passes and it just went from there."
Decatur, now 2-0 on the season, struck first in the high-scoring opening half. Quarterback Tim Metts, who completed 13 of 16 passes for 240 yards and four TDs, found the end zone first on an eight-yard scamper. Chris Ortiz was good on all point-after tries and it was 7-0.
The Leopards burned the GHS secondary consistently through the first half. They drove 78 yards in 12 plays on their first drive and scored on a 23-yard TD catch by Kenya Morgan to make it 7-7.
The Eagles were not fazed. In fact, they got an interception by Jake Connally and went on to score four unanswered touchdowns. Harrison danced into the end zone twice and Matt Huddleston ran straight through the middle of the secondary on his way to a 23-yard TD catch.
The final score of the half came from Huddleston again when he scored on a 10-yard run to make it 35-7. Huddleston, who was named the Dicks Sporting Goods Player of the Week for Texas last week, ran for another 167 yards this week on 13 carries.
Gainesville picked off Metts late in the second quarter to close the gap before the break. A 51-yard pass from Keelan Lewis to Francisco Castillo made it 35-14 at the half. That was the third play in two games that went for over 50 yards against the DHS defense.
The second half was all Decatur. Nick Martinez, Ross Madden, Colby Moore, Jesse King and Kole Fuller racked up several tackles near the line of scrimmage to keep the hosts at bay.
The defensive work allowed the offense to put the game away. The Eagles went up 42-14 when Metts broke free around the left side for a 22-yard TD.
Gainesville scored right away on another long pass but Decatur answered with two more scores. Metts hit Harrison for his third touchdown of the night and backup quarterback Colton Parker, a freshman, blasted through the line from two yards out.
Brad Bakker, Keldyn Kee, Dillon Deaton, Clint Moore and Cody Byrd are just a few of the offensive linemen who helped wear down an opponent for the second straight week. |

The Bridgeport Bulls manhandled the Class 4A Mineral Wells Rams 56-28 Friday in their opening night at Bull Memorial Stadium. The Bulls dominated the game throughout the first two quarters and led 35-0 at halftime.
It was a great night for the Green brothers - Corbin and Cameron. Corbin posted the Bulls first touchdown on a 13-yard run and then capped the second quarter with a 20-yard touchdown run.
Cameron Green hit Collin White for an 8-yard touchdown pass and Austin Blevins for a 10-yard touchdown in the first quarter and then put the icing on the cake with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Daniels in the third quarter.
It was also a great night for Daniels, who scored on a 20-yard run in the second quarter and again on a 26-yard run in the final period. Mike Garcia scored on a 16-yard return of a blocked Mineral Wells punt in the third quarter. Ricky Martinez was dead solid perfect on every extra point.

It was a spectacular night for Alvord running back Shane Watkins as the Bulldogs shut out Petrolia 44-0 in a non-district game at Pirate Stadium. Watkins picked up 192 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs.
"You couldn't ask for more from Shane," said Alvord Coach Mike Chaney. "He had an all around outstanding game."
Watkins put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with 8:48 left in the first quarter with a 63-yard touchdown run and Devin Sexton's extra point marked the only scoring in the first quarter.
In the second, Watkins scored on a 26-yard run and Sexton's kick was good. Later in the period, quarterback Trevor Hartfield hit Steven Talamantes on a 61-yard touchdown pass, but the extra point failed. When the teams went to the locker room at half-time, Alvord led 20-0.
Just seconds after the third quarter began, Watkins scored again, this time on a 57-yard run. The extra point was blocked. Later in the period, Hartfield hit Justin Meador for an 11-yard touchdown pass.
To wrap up the game in the fourth quarter, Alvord's Ethan Gardiner scored on a 17-yard run and with two-minutes to go, Tony Tackett posted another six points on a 24-yard touchdown run.
Hartfield completed six of 12 passes for 102 yards and two touchdowns. Meador was the leading receiver, hauling in four passes for 23 yards and 1 touchdown.
The victory is Alvord's second win of the young season. Next week the Bulldogs host Valley View for their home opener. |

It was a tough night for the Boyd Yellowjackets as they lost their second game of the new season to Gunter 36-11 at Tiger Stadium Friday.
"We struggled with assignments in the first half and turned the ball over too many times," said Boyd Coach J. G. Cartwright. "Our defense played well in the second half, but we were just too far behind. We gave Gunter great field position on turnovers."
The Yellowjackets were first on the scoreboard when Billy Ray Schooling sent the pigskin sailing through the uprights with a 16-yard field goal. But the 'Jackets didn't post another score until the fourth quarter when, with 40 seconds remaining, quarterback Tim Fleming hit Hilton Maynor with a 17-yard touchdown pass. Fleming and Mayor teamed up again for a two point conversion.
The Yellowjackets were behind 17-3 at half-time after Gunter scored 17 points in the first quarter, including a 40-yard fumble recovery touchdown by Bear Tamburin. Gunter posted a touchdown by Paul Nicholson in the third quarter and then a pair of touchdowns by Chad Tucker in the final period.
"We've got lots of things to work on next week," said Cartwright. Boyd hosts Glen Rose next week at Yellowjacket stadium. |

Despite a winless campaign in 2007 and losing their opener last week, the Chico Dragons rebounded with a 14-7 win at the expense of the home town Eagles at Valley View in Friday night football action. It was the first win for the Dragons since 2006.
Chico struck first when Klent Selz found the end zone from 10 yards out at the 1:33 mark in the game's opening period. The extra point attempt was blocked, but Chico owned a 6-0 lead. They managed to hold the lead until Valley View's Dustin Tomlinson got into the end zone on a one-yard run with 8:32 left in the first half. Sebastian Orozco's point-after kick gave the Eagles a 7-6 edge that they carried into the locker room.
After halftime adjustments the teams played scorless until the Dragons finally took advantage of Valley View's third fumble of the third quarter. Running back Kyler Hale broke free for a 21-yard touchdown with 2:04 to play in the period, and also added the conversion run to bring the final tally to 14-7.
The two teams fought each other to a standoff in the final period and the Dragons had earned their first victory since Oct. 27, 2006 season.
Kyler Hale was the leading rusher in the game with 114 yards on 20 carries while Selz threw for 58 yards with a seven completion performance on 15 attempts. Selz's favorite target was Shane Maddux who hauled in three passes for 40 yards.
An elated Coach Pete Hart mentioned how they had struggled last week in the opener, but "we came out strong, and defensively played very hard and caused a lot of turnovers. We had the support of everybody - cheerleaders, band, fans - and that really kept the kids going."
Chico will try to make it two in a row next week in Archer City. |

For the second week in a row, Northwest's defense was impressive.
And for the second week in a row, the Texans are winners.
Northwest beat Burleson 10-3 Friday at Texan Stadium to move to 2-0 on the year.
The defense may have come up with its best effort in the third quarter - a quarter which saw the Northwest offense run only one play. Leading 10-0, the Elks ended a time-consuming drive with a 39-yard field goal by Trey Castor. The Texans got the ball back but fumbled on the first play.
Burleson was threatening to score again a few minutes later, but the Texans' defense forced a fumble on another field goal attempt to get the ball back.
Northwest scored on its opening drive of the game. Brysen Curb found Kyle Vick for a 3-yard score with 7:12 left in the quarter. Cameron Langer's kick gave the Texans an early 7-0 lead.
Langer added a 19-yard field goal in the second quarter to cap a 14-play, 71-yard drive. On that drive, Curb was 5 of 6 for 44 yards.
That would be all the offense the Texans could muster, but it proved to be enough.
"Our defense played well for the second week in a row," Coach Leonard McAngus said.
Curb was an efficient 14 of 18 passing for 112 yards and the touchdown. Eric Clinton caught 4 balls for 39 yards. Taylor Collins carried the ball 12 times for 37 yards.
Burleson's Blake Smith led his team in rushing yards, 62, and receiving yards, 27. |

Paradise rolled out to a 21-0 lead after three quarters Friday and held off a fourth-quarter rally by the visiting Henrietta Bearcats for a 21-14 win.
Henrietta closed the lead to a single touchdown with 7:03 left in the game when Bearcats quarterback Seth Crumpton hit receiver Josh Sharp with a 45-yard touchdown pass. Kicker Blake Wiest was good on the extra point.
But the Panther defense was able to keep Henrietta out of the end zone for the rest of the game and preserve the win.
Paradise scored first on an 11-yard run by Michael Brown with 3:30 left in the first half.
The Panthers gave themselves a little bit of breathing room in the third quarter when Nick Pike scored from one yard out with 7:46 left in the frame. Quarterback PJ Fuller and receiver Conner Higgins connected on an 81-yard play to give Paradise its biggest lead and set up the fourth quarter drama. Thad Limke was a perfect 3 for 3 on point after tries for the game.
Fuller was the game's leading passer with 255 yards with 3 interceptions and 1 touchdown. Higgins caught 4 balls for 118 yards. Pike had a game-high 85-yards rushing on 11 carries.
Crumpton was Henrietta's leading passer and rusher with 181 yards and 84 yards, respectively. Sharp caught 3 passes for 95 yards.
With the win, Paradise improved to 2-0 going into next week's game against Aubrey. |
