Candidate Profiles:
MARILYN BELEW (R)
Candidate for County Attorney
WCMessenger

Marilyn BelewWhy did you decide to seek this office?

I have lived in Wise County for approximately fourteen (14) years. During the last 14 years I have had the opportunity to watch Wise County grow and change. I am raising my two children in Wise County and I want Wise County to be a safe place for my kids and everyone else who resides in the County. I have the experience necessary to be successful in this position, the motivation to continue making improvements and the drive to make sure that the job gets done.

Please identify a major issue dealing with the position you are seeking, your solutions or views about that issue.

Justice requires that different cases be handled in appropriate ways. The County Attorney has an entire arsenal of weapons available to deal with offenders. One of my top priorities in office will be to identify the most dangerous offenders and the repeat offenders and to make sure that these people are dealt with appropriately. Local law enforcement can often offer unique insight in this regard and I want the office of County Attorney to be open to that insight. I also hope that the County Attorney can coordinate efforts with the District Attorney's office (charged with the prosecution of felonies) so that Wise County can have a unified front against crime.

Experience that qualifies you to serve in the position you seek.

I have been practicing law for a period of twelve (12) years this May. During the last 12 years I have handled all types of criminal cases ranging from misdemeanors through felony level cases, both at the trial and pre-trial level. My experience is not, however, limited to criminal defense. During law school I worked for the Tarrant County District Attorney's Office where my duties included reviewing police reports and statements, evaluating cases and making recommendations as to the ultimate disposition of the cases. In addition I have experience dealing with the victims of family violence from both the prosecution and defense perspectives.

If elected what will be your most important goal?

My goal is to help the office to continue to evolve into the most efficient and effective operation possible. The County Attorney is the chief prosecutor in the county of misdemeanor offenses, but it also at times may assist the County Commissioners. Coming from a private sector background, I have had to learn how to utilize resources to their fullest and make good business decisions that would serve my business and further my client's interests. I want to bring these same principals to work at the County Attorney's office in an effort to achieve an efficient administration of justice. One way is to assure full cooperation between that office and the various law enforcement agencies and other county offices that are involved in protecting and serving the public.
