Great in Graham

While most of their friends were out of- town enjoying spring break, the Boyd High School boys' track team was in Graham taking care of a little business Saturday afternoon.

That business was a golden opportunity. The Yellowjackets, who did not have the biggest team in the event, placed in the top five in 10 of the 11 events they entered to edge Munday for the team championships of the Division I meet.

Boyd wrapped up its team title in the last race of the night, which also happens to be the highlight of all track meets - the mile relay. The Yellowjackets sizzled with a season-fast time of 3 minutes, 39 seconds to win the race and the meet.

Boyd, which outlasted Wise County rival and second-place Alvord by almost five seconds (3:44), was solid from start to finish. The quartet included Trent Carter, Tory Sanderson, Ryan Wilson and Shaney Neyens.

It was a great day for Neyens, a standout senior who wants nothing more than a trip to Austin this season. He played a role in a lot of points for his team.

Neyens scored 10 points by winning the 300-meter hurdles in 40.6 seconds. He finished just ahead of teammate Tim Fleming who was second at 41.8.

The 400 relay team also got a boost from Neyens en route to taking second place after it clocked a 45.19, just a blink behind Alvord at 45.17. The BHS speedsters also included Carter, Fleming and Sanderson.

Boyd also captured third place in the 800 relay where it posted a time of 1:37.2. The group featured Neal Livingston, Jeff Mears, Jesse Ricketts and Sanderson.

Carter also came up big in the 400 meters where he clocked a second-place time of 54.68 seconds. Ryan Wilson came in fifth in the same race at 56.3.

Curtis Hamilton was among the best in the 800 where he took fourth place after clocking a 2:12. Jesse Rickets was fourth as well in the 100 in 12.2.

The only points scored in field events by the Yellowjackets came in the high jump. That's where Fleming was fourth when he cleared 5 feet, 8 inches.
