Illnesses and injuries took their toll on the Chico High School track team last week at the Double Bs Relay meet at Bridgeport. However, the small group that was healthy and ready to go exceeded the coaches expectations.
The top showing of the day came on the boys' side where all-state standout Hayden Eubanks picked up where he left off last season. The senior, who has his sights set on a return trip to Austin in May, won both of his events to open the new season.
Eubanks recorded a personal-best throw in the shot put with a heave of 49 feet, 10.75 inches to win the event easily. His record throw beat his old record of 48-6 that he launched at the regional track meet in Stephenville last spring.
The Chico multi-sport star also won the discus with a toss of 151-1.
"Hayden did very well for his first track meet. He has been working hard and putting forth the effort on both the shot put and the discus," said CHS coach Mike Garza. "I look forward to seeing him improve throughout the year."
On the girls' side, several CHS athletes were held out because of sickness. However, two Lady Dragons finished among the best in their events.
Alyssa Bowyer opened the season with a sixth-place performance in the triple jump. She posted a leap of 30-11.
Bryn Davis' decision to compete in shot put was a success as she took sixth in her first try. She battled a strong field of talent and the cold weather with a throw of 29-6.
"Bryn did a great job for us in the shot. She came out this year and has decided to throw for us and is working really hard," said CHS coach Karen Lalk. "Alyssa did a good job as well. As a team we had a rough night with our varsity girls between injuries and illness. I am looking forward to being back at full force."
