If Monday's first round of the District 8-3A boys' golf tournament was any indication of how the final round will go, then there will be plenty of excitement on the greens of Oakmont Country Club in Corinth.
The Bridgeport and Argyle teams are about as even as two teams can be after the first 18 holes. The Eagles got a day-low score of 78 from Kyle Boliver to hold on to first place in the team standings after day one with a score of 328.
That's not a very big lead considering the Bulls are lurking just one stroke back. Their top four golfers putted an 88 or better and stand at 329 and will patiently wait until the final round on Monday.
Sanger sits in third at 365 and Decatur is four strokes back at 369. Only the top two teams and 10 individuals will move on to regionals in three weeks in Odessa.
Bridgeport's Jacob Caldwell had the second lowest score of the day as he fired a 78. Teammate Brock Rose was two strokes back at 80.
Bryce Rose came in third among the BHS putters at 85, followed by Kenneth Weaver at 86 and Matt Wood at 99.
Decatur was led through the first round by Andrew Gage and Drake Harper who carded 88s. Hunter Hargrave was next at 96, followed by Casey Duncum at 97 and Justin Tompkins at 98.
Sissies have commanding
lead in girls' tourney
The Bridgeport girls' team had a good day at Turtle Hills Golf Course on Tuesday. The talented group will take a 67-stroke lead into the final round in Muenster on Tuesday.
The Sissies led the way with a team score of 367, well ahead of Sanger's top team at 434. Decatur, which won the 8-3A title two years ago, is third at 471 and has work to do if it wants to earn the second regional spot.
Bridgeport was led by move-in Candace Brister. She fired a one-over par 73 to lead the way and is 11 strokes ahead of Gainesville's Sierra Straight at 84.
Paige Walker was second among Bridgeport's putters with a round of 93, five strokes in front of teammate Ashton Walling. Alyssa McComis was next at 103 and Dandy Shinn came in at 115.
The Lady Eagles were led by Lauren Spence with a round of 92. Anne Marie Smith was second among the DHS putters at 106.
Jordan Alker was next in for Decatur at 128, followed by Taylor Lindsey at 145 and Reagan Trachta at 146.
