After spending the last four years winning games with excellent pitching and consistent defense, the Northwest High School softball team has found a new way to come out on top - hitting.
Despite the graduation of pitcher Brittany Barnhill, the Lady Texans are still getting good pitching from Erinn Jayjohn. The defense, however, has not come around but the hitting has and that was the difference Friday night in a 9-8 win over Colleyville Heritage.
Though it took one extra inning to decide a winner, for the third time in as many games, Northwest posted big offensive numbers. That has been a problem in recent years.
Northwest trailed 8-2 in the top of the fourth inning before coming alive. The locals pulled within three runs with three scores in the bottom half of the inning.
The Lady Texans, who got a triple and a double from A.J. Deal, scored three more times in the sixth inning to tie the game at 8-8.
Jayjohn did not allow a run after the fourth inning and that paved the way for the win. Her team got one run in the bottom of the eighth inning to get the win.
Northwest, which committed four errors, scattered a district-high 14 hits in the victory as they rocked Colleyville pitcher Kayla English. Christin Robertson and Natalie Nimmo played a big part in the offense as they smacked doubles to keep the bases warm.
