If its first season was any indication of things to come, the Chico High School powerlifting team could see a bright future.

The boys' team saw its first season come to an end last weekend in Decatur where three powerlifters took on the best in the Division III regional championships. Though there were no state qualifiers this time, it might not be long before the Dragons are battling for the ultimate gold medal.

The top showing for Chico was turned in by its only senior. Rush Porter finished seventh overall in the 220-pound weight class with 1,059 pounds.

"He was in fifth after two events and decided to try to make the top two and advance to the state meet," said coach Mike McAlister. "He put up a valiant effort but did not get his last attempt on the deadlift. He could have played it safe and increased his total with a different lift but he went for the chance at state and should be commended for it."

Porter's numbers were some of his bests the season. He had a 260-pound bench press, a 400 squat and a 390 deadlift.

Danny Tolliver did not finish high enough to move on to state but he had a solid performance in the 165 division. The junior recorded four personal bests in all three events and total weight.

The football star posted a total lift of 1,035 pounds. He record a 235 bench press, a 370 squat and a 430 deadlift.

Shawn Farquhar, who will also return next year, competed in the super heavyweight division where he racked up 1,095 pounds. He posted a 255 bench press, a 430 squat and a 410 deadlift.
