Charles Leroy Johnson

Memorial services for Charles Leroy Johnson, 72, of Chandler will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 5 at Lake Palestine United Methodist Church in Chandler with the Revs. Richard Prather and Johnny Irish officiating. Johnson died Tuesday, March 25, 2008. Born Aug. 15, 1935, in El Dorado, Kan., to Fred V. and Osca Ruth Johnson, he spent over 35 years in law enforcement. He was the first chief of Elderville Volunteer Fire Department. He served as fire marshal, interim city manager and captain of the police department for the city of Kilgore and was chief of police in Bridgeport and municipal judge of Runaway Bay. Johnson served as an ombudsman for many years in the North Texas area. He was a member of the Boyd Masonic Lodge and was a 32nd degree mason. He also was a past president of the AARP in Bridgeport. Johnson was a member of Lake Palestine United Methodist Church in Chandler. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Wanda Sue Kennedy Johnson; son, Rick Johnson and wife, Dana, of Tyler; daughters, Debra Cates and husband, Kip, of New Harmony and Mary Veal of Tyler; sister-in-law, Charlotte Nelson and husband, Michael, of White Oak; three grandsons, two granddaughters and four great-granchildren.
