The Decatur Woman's Club hosted the 48th Texas Federation of Women's Clubs Pioneer District Spring Convention Saturday, March 5, installing Lynn Long and Kay Mara, both of Decatur Women's Club, as president and president-elect for 2008-2010, respectively.
"It's a big commitment," Long said. "Club work is a lot of fun. We do a lot of things behind the scenes that people don't realize."
The Pioneer District includes 28 clubs in an area stretching from Iowa Park and Wichita Falls in the north to Comanche County in the south, including clubs from Southlake, Fort Worth, Denton, Weatherford and Pilot Point. The district includes 1,700 members.
The convention's business meeting allowed departments and committees within the district to report projects, and awards were also announced. The runner-up in the Outstanding Club Woman/Volunteer category was Decatur's Marla Davidson.
"We had four or five winners at district that will go to state. If you win at state, it goes straight to nationals," Long said. "We've had some programs that have won at the national level."
Seventy-seven women representing the various clubs attended the convention. Wise County Sheriff David Walker spoke on domestic violence at the convention, which is the General Federation of Women's Clubs' national theme.
