The Texas Education Agency has released preliminary fifth and eighth grade math TAKS scores, and the majority of Wise County students can rest easy knowing they passed the math portion of the TAKS test.
Fifth and eighth graders are required to pass the test in order to promote to the next grade level. Those that failed the test will have two opportunities to retake and pass the test May 13 and July 1.
This school year was the first year eighth graders were required to pass the test in order to advance to ninth grade. This year also marks the first year that special education students were required to take a special modified version of the TAKS that presented material parallel with their grade level. In order to comply with the No Child Left Behind Act, Texas replaced a prior exam which allowed students to test at their instructional level with TAKS (Accommodated). TAKS (Accommodated) features larger fonts and simpler vocabulary and material is consistent with the grade in which the students are enrolled.
The preliminary scores include TAKS (Accommodated) scores, as well as scores for students who were not present during campus snapshot day in October 2007. However, TAKS (Accommodated) and scores for students who enrolled after the snapshot date will not be reflected in the schools' final report card or in state accountability ratings, which will be released later this year.
State-wide, 83 percent of fifth-grade students and 75 percent of eighth-grade students passed the math TAKS test on the first administration.
Preliminary passing percentages for Wise County schools are as follows:
