Thursday marked the groundbreaking for an expansion at the Ascension and St. Mark's Anglican Church between Decatur and Bridgeport.
"We're very excited," said Father DeWayne Adams. "There are a lot of smiles right now."
The groundbreaking follows several years of fundraising for the expansion, which will include the expansion of the parish hall and a new education wing.
"Right now, our parish hall only holds about 25 people. It's really more like a parish room," Adams said.
"And we don't have adequate classroom space. We have a portable building that we use for classrooms. This expansion will be more family friendly and everything."
The expansion will include new kitchen facilities, a chapel, classrooms and office space.
The total square footage is just under 3,000. Adams said the construction would probably take five months.
Fundraising for the expansion is ongoing and plans are in place for a Cattle Fund Drive in which the church will auction off donated calves.
The expansion will allow the church to offer more services to its parishioners as well as provide space for additional programs.
"We'll be able to host events and when people are married in the church, they can have a reception here," Adams said.
"If we ever wanted to host a conference, this will allow us to do that."
