Cory Schwenn announced his candidacy for Precinct 1 county commissioner. He will run as a Republican.

As an independent business owner, Schwenn feels he has characteristics to serve the community.

"I know how to create and operate within a budget," he wrote in an e-mail.

"I know how to evaluate and purchase equipment and the importance of proper maintenance. I know about government regulations and how to operate with compliance.

"I understand good customer service, how to listen and how to communicate effectively."

He grew up on a dairy farm in South Dakota. After graduating high school, he joined the U.S. Army and spent two years on active duty in Operation Desert Storm and spent another two years in the Texas Army National Guard.

"I believe in America, and I believe in Wise County," he wrote. "I want to be a part of operating Wise County today and shaping it for the future."

In 1992, he moved to Texas and attended Lincoln Tech to study automotive repair.

Five years later, he moved to Wise County and worked for the Northwest school district bus garage and James Wood Motors before opening his automotive repair business outside of Rhome.

"As a businessman, I have watched Wise County grow and experienced its positive impact on my business," he wrote.

Schwenn expressed his concern with road repair and improvement, effective use of tax revenue and listening to the concerns of citizens.

"People are never happy about raising taxes, therefore we must make the most of the revenue and resources that we have," he wrote. "We must continually evaluate what we have and be sure that resources are allocated and used to the best advantage.

"Nothing gets me more fired up than feeling that I am not important or am being ignored. If you elect me as your county commissioner, you can be assured that your opinion will be heard and valued by me."
